Salem was a small colony in Massachusetts马萨诸塞州 1692. In February of that year, two young girls began to act strangely. They seemed to be having fits发作. They couldn't control their body movements. They would fall down in a faint晕倒. A doctor decided the girls were victims受害者 of witchcraft巫术.

The girls' parents and the doctor forced them to tell who had cast施加 evil邪恶的 spells on them. They named Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, an Indian slave. Tituba was so frightened that she finally confessed承认 to being a witch. This caused great fear in Salem.

Soon other people began having fits. More and more people were accused控告 of being witches. Over the next few months, 150 women, man and even children were arrested.

In June the witch trials began. The first to be tried it was Bridge Bishop. The judge found her guilty. On June 10 she was hanged吊死. Then 13 more women and five men were found guilty and hanged. Most were found guilty because the people who had accused them behaved so strangely in the courtroom法庭.

In October, the governor of Massachusetts stopped the trials. He named a new judge and a new place for future trials. Those who had accused the prisoners were not allowed to speak or act out in the courtroom.

The hangings stopped. The new judge released释放 all those waiting to be tried. He pardoned all those who had been sentenced to death. The Salem witch trials were ended.

People visiting Salem today can still see the courthouse where the first witch trials were held. They can also see the old cemetery墓地 where the 19 innocent people are buried.
