Ice cream is often called "The Great American Dessert". Today, more than one billion gallons加仑 of ice cream are made every year. That’s about four gallons a year for every person in the United States.

Ice cream was not invented in the United States. It was served thousands of years ago as a mixture of snow, fruit, honey. Gradually milk or cream was added. The recipe配方 for ice cream first came to the United States from Europe in the late 1700's. It was made in a bowl set in a bucket of ice with salt added. The salt helped to keep the temperature low so the mixture would harden. The hand-cranked手摇的 ice cream freezer was invented in 1843. By 1851, mechanical refrigeration had been invented. Large quantities of ice cream could be made and stored in freezers. Ice cream shops became very popular. The ice cream was served in dishes.

On July 23, 1904, Charles Minches of St. Louis, Missouri, started selling ice cream in a pastry cone圆锥体. The walk-away可携带走的 cone was first offered to the public at the St. Louis World's Fair later that year.

There were many ice cream stands at the fair. Some sellers came up with different kinds of cones. Each claimed to be the inventor of the cone. Some were waffles华夫饼干 that were rolled into a cone shape and filled with ice cream. Some were made from pastry dough shaped like a small cup and baked. It doesn't matter who the real inventor of the cone was. People loved the idea. The ice cream cone was here to stay.
