The first bar chart illustrates how numbers of marriages and divorces changed in the USA from 1970 to 2000 and the second bar chart compares the marital status in 1970 and 2000.
In 1970 there were 2.5 million marriages, and this figure remained unchanged in 1980. Since then, it had decreased steadily till 2000, ending at 2 million. On the other hand, starting at 1million, the number of divorces rose significantly in the following decade. After peaking at 1.4 million in 1980, this number had fallen back to 1970 figure by the end of the period. It is obvious from the second chart that the married adults were the dominant group in both years though the proportion decreased noticeably from70% to around 58%. Conversely, the figure for those who were never married was on a rise, rising from 14% to 20% over the period. It is also worth mentioning that widowed and divorced adults only accounted for quite small proportions in these two years.All in all, fewer and fewer people got married in the USA over the period, and this was reflected in the decreases in the number of marriages as well as in the proportion of married adults.
