这样一来，就出现了一个新问题：在识字量远远达不到流畅阅读门槛的漫长时期（可能有十年甚至更长），孩子能够阅读的内容就极其有限。以前，欧美传统社会不需要那么多识字、能阅读的人，大家就拿发蒙读本（primers）来读，这些往往取材于圣经故事，谈不上专门为儿童创作。到了现代，就有了这样的需求，要用非常有限的词汇，来展现儿童感兴趣、读得进的故事、人物。能够做到这一点的人，被称为“儿童文学作家”；而罗尔德·达尔，就是欧美儿童文学作家当中顶尖一批人中引人瞩目的那一个。
罗尔德·达尔的儿童文学作品，屡获大奖：新英格兰儿童图书馆圆桌会议奖，萨里学校年度书籍奖，加利福尼亚青少年读者奖章，英国儿童图书奖、马萨诸塞儿童图书奖、纽约杰出图书奖、惠特布莱德童书奖（白面包奖，Whitbread Award）……简直是数不胜数，可谓是荣誉等身。罗尔德·达尔的儿童文学作品，植根于作家对于儿童生活深入的观察和理解，结合了他富有传奇性的人生经历，具备极为瑰丽的想象，对于孩子们来说有着无比的吸引力。对《查理和巧克力工厂》爱不释手的小朋友，我相信不是一个两个。
