Cutting to the Core and Going Swimming

It is impossible to talk about Columbia’s academics without immediately referring to what is known as the Core Curriculum, a series of seminar-sized required courses in literature, philosophy, history, music, art, and science that are considered to provide the essentials of a liberal education. While some latitude is afforded in thechoice of science classes, courses entitled Contemporary Civilization,Literature Humanities, Art Humanities, Music Humanities, and Frontiers inScience are compulsory. While the Core Curriculum is not for everyone, mostagree that it provides an excellent foundation for a liberal arts education.Literature Humanities, a year-long course in Western literature that spansHomer to Virginia Woolf, is a particularly popular class, as is Contemporary Civilization,a course that exposes students to many of the seminal texts dealing with Westernphilosophy.

“The Core Curriculum is one of the reasons I came to Columbia,” states a freshman. “The Core exposes you to somany different things you otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to study. Everycollege student should learn from these writers and thinkers. ”Students find that, to some degree, the Core experience depends on the professors that youget for a particular subject. Opined one coed, “There is some luck involved in fulfillingthe Core requirements, since you can’t choose your profs for most courses. ”Inaddition to the required courses in literature, philosophy, art, and music, theCore also demands the equivalent of two years of language at the college leveland two courses in the Global Core, classes that deal with issues ofmulticulturalism, race, and gender. This requirement, in fact, is a relativelyrecent addition to the Core Curriculum, added by the college’s Committee on theCore, in reaction to student criticism about the paucity of works by women andnon-white, non-Western writers.

A rarity among colleges today, the Core Curriculum mandates that students take a minimum of two courses inphysical education. “There are so many offerings,” says one sophomore, “that itis always possible to find classes that suit even the most dedicated ‘couchpotato.’” In addition to the required gym classes, students must be able toswim seventy-five yards in the Uris Pool without resting. Although a seeminglyunusual graduation prerequisite, Columbia College is not the only Ivy concernedwith whether its undergraduates sink or swim. Cornell and Dartmouth also demandcompetence in the water.

Students must declare a “major” ora “concentration” (a less extensive version of the major that requires fewercourses) by the end of their sophomore year. Undergraduates may also “doublemajor” or may fulfill the requirements of a major and concentration at the sametime. Beyond the Core and the major or concentration, students choose from awide variety of electives in any department in order to complete the minimum of124“points” necessary to graduate.
