While finishing out the 1927 baseball season, Babe Ruth became the first baseball player to hit 60 homeruns in a single season.  This finished off the best year of the New York Yankees, even thought of such to this day.

Why

significant

In a team lineup that is still considered legendary, Babe Ruth helped sensationalize the sport both with his on field exploits as well as his larger than life persona out of the arena.  He is one of the first five of the inaugural players inducted into the Hall of Fame.
