While not approved by the political leadership, MacArthur had already established bridgeheads across the Yalu River in Chinese territory, prepared to continue prosecuting the war, despite the frigid temperatures in the field and politicians back home afraid of warning the war. On this date, the Chinese Red Army opted to help the North Koreans in a surprise attack that completely caught the US and UN forces unprepared and pushed them all the way back into South Korea.“Red China’s” entry into the war brought serious considerations of the regional war broadening into a nuclear fueled World War III. MacArthur was able to stabilize the front around the pre war boundary, the 38th Parallel, where it remained for another two and a half years, before being replaced as leader while politicians at home sought to find a diplomatic solution while maintaining the status quo.
