At the time, only white men who owned property were allowed to vote. George Washington was unanimously elected for the first of his two terms as president, and John Adams became the first vice president.

The U.S. Constitution established the Electoral College system. Voters cast ballots to choose state electors, who in turn vote for the president. The president and vice president are the only elected federal officials chosen by the Electoral College instead of by direct popular vote.

Critics of the Electoral College argue that the winner-take-all system makes it possible for a candidate to be elected president even if s/he gets fewer popular votes. However, supporters contend that without the Electoral College System, the more populated states would decide the results of every election, and issues important to voters in smaller states would be ignored.
