The James Younger gang was a group of train and bank robbers who had a common history of being Confederate irregulars (“Bushwackers”) during the Civil War. Northern commercial interests after the war made returning to the farming life difficult, inspiring them to take to crime. The Northfield Bank was a center of northern financial interests and is sometimes looked at as a post script battle of the Civil War. The raid destroyed the gang with all the Youngers captured and the James brothers escaping wounded but with their lives.
