It was a campaign promise he delivered on before even becoming president. While there he realized that conventionally speaking, the war was not likely to be “winnable” in a manner that was worth achieving. “Ike’s” reputation as Supreme Allied Leader of the Allies in World War II gave him great credence with the Chinese and North Koreans. He wanted an armistice and when he threatened the use of nuclear weapons unless the Chinese and North Koreans would come to the table, he was taken seriously. An armistice was concluded in June in 1953, but the war was never technically concluded leading to the most militarily fortified boundary in the world between North and South Korea.
