Kun Opera is one of China’s most historical operas with a history of more than 600 years. It is listed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2001.

About 400 years ago, Tang Xianzu, a Chinese Ming Dynasty playwright wrote the classic Kun Opera The Peony Pavilion based on a popular novel of that time. The story tells when a teenage girl named Du Liniang was appreciating spring in the garden, she fell asleep. While in her dream, she got blessed by the Flower Spirits and met a handsome young scholar named Liu Mengmei. The two fell in love. Awaken from the dream, Du Liniang missed the young scholar in her dream so much and unfortunately died from the lovesickness. One day Liu Mengmei walked into the garden and found the portrait of Du Liniang. His sincerity summoned back Du Liniang’s soul and brought her back to life. Finally, they got together and lived happily ever after.

The Peony Pavilion is not only a masterpiece of Tang Xianzu, but also one of the most important romantic operas in Chinese history. The original version of The Peony Pavilion has 55 acts, which takes several days to perform the whole opera. Famous Chinese writer Pai Hsien-yung adapted the classic opera into a new version together with the artists from Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province. This new version is called “Young Lovers’ Version”. It focuses on love, depicting how “the person with deepest love in the world” Du Liniang fell in love in her dream and died and then brought back to life all because of love.

Ancient Greece is the birthplace of western drama. For a long time, ancient Greek drama has profoundly influenced the development of western drama and culture. Kun Opera, regarded as the “mother of a hundred operas” in Chinese opera history, combined all the essences of Chinese opera, including poems, music, songs, dances and drama, making it an important component in the history of Chinese opera, literature and music. The most attractive thing for Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province attending Athens & Epidaurus Festival is that it will perform this Young Lovers’ Version of The Peony Pavilion in the starry night of Greece, presenting a dialogue between the historical Chinese Kun Opera and the ancient Western drama across time and space.

The Peony Pavilion has been one of the most popular operas in China for hundreds of years, performed in both the most advanced modern theatres and the historical Jiangnan classical gardens. The Odeon of of Herodes Atticus where it will be performed this time is located at the foot of Acropolis of Athens. Being one of the oldest theatre in the world, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus was built around 160 to 174 AD, being the great city symbol of that time. Many famous ancient Greek tragedies written by Sophocles, Euripides and others, were once performed in this theatre, adding to the cultural meaning of this venue.

In addition to the performance itself, the festival organizes various educational activities, and the Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre of Jiangsu Province will hold an interesting workshop at the Athens School of Fine Arts on July 13, to show to audience the unique charm of Kun Opera from a very close distance.

All of the above is under the framework of the 2017 China-Greece Cultural Exchanges and Cultural and Creative Industries Cooperation Year, which is co-organized by China’s Ministry of Culture and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, and presented by China Arts and Entertainment Group. The Year includes projects in performing arts, visual arts, cultural heritages and creative industries. It aims at enhancing cultural exchanges and collaboration between China and Greece, and will play a constructive role in promoting dialogue between the two ancient civilizations and the inheritance and innovation of traditional arts.
