Chased by a Flash Flood
It was late afternoon. The weather had been nearly perfect. Christina and I decided to hike to Acomat Falls.
It was around 4 p.m. when we reached the falls—a 30-foot barrel of whitewater shooting over the basin. We dove into the green pool and floated on our backs, looking up at the canyon (峡谷) walls.
By 4:30, We knew we needed to head back to the car before dark, but I was waist deep in the river trying to photograph the falls, the hanging vines, and the dreaminess of the place. Christina was sitting on a stone above the basin. I finally got a good shot—and then she screamed.
With a crack like thunder, a wall of brown water rushed over the top of the falls, carrying fragments of trees and plants with it. Flash flood. I jumped out of the river seconds before the flood crashed over the spot where I’d just been standing. Christina scrambled barefoot off the boulder (巨石) toward higher ground.
Christina led us through dense brush, prickly (多刺的) trees, and ankle-deep mud. When we’d climbed 200 feet, we stopped to catch our breath. Now we had a different problem: The trail and the road were on the other side of the swollenriver. We were stuck in the canopy (顶棚).
Then the sky opened up. Christina asked if I had my phone. It was wet, but still blinked on. No service. We decided to move toward higher ground to get a better signal. It was almost dark. For a moment, the phone connected, and I heard thefaint voice of Mae, our vacation rental host. She said she’d call for help. Then the phone went silent.
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
We had no idea whether rescuers could reach us.

After another hour, we saw lights across the canyon.

Christina,Mae

Paragraph 1:
We had no idea whether rescuers could reach us. We told each other not to panic as night set in. Christina found a tree which we used as a shelter from the rain. I tried to send more texts to Mae, but most of them bounced back undeliverable. There was nothing we could do but wait. We’d been stuck for nearly four hours. Shivering, we gathered closer for warmth.Gradually, it grew dark
Paragraph 2:
After another hour, we saw faint lights across the canyon. My wet phone had begun to lose function, but the flashlight still worked. I turned it on and shone it at the canopy above as a signal. Shortly after, I heard the blades of a helicopter. In minutes, the trees were thrashing in the wind generated by the aircraft. A cable appeared through the canopy, and then a rescuer. We were safe.

1.词汇
photograph v.
2.短语
get a good shot 拍了一张好照片;catch our breath 喘气
There was nothing we could do but wait.

[分析] 本句是一个固定句式,“there is nothing to do but...”

Crystal Cuevas and Javier Rodriguez fell in love with each other when they were juniors in high school. They had been expecting a romantic wedding for years. Sadly, Rodriguez was suffering from a serious heart disease and had to stay in hospital. With the worsening of his illness, Rodriguez decided the wedding. On hearing that, Cuevas cried with joy.
The special day finally came. With the ceremony approaching, Cuevas began to pace just a little, her fingers slowly reaching to a small bunch of white roses. The 23-year-old lady joked that it was the groom who is supposed to be kept waiting, not the bride.
In a tiny church in Chicago, Rodriguez wanted everything to be just so—his socks, his white shirt, his bow tie. About an hour after the wedding was expected to start, Rodriguez arrived in a wheelchair, followed by a group of friends and people with a mass of clear plastic tubesswinging from above his head. Dozens of people squeezed into the church, most with tearfuleyes before the ceremony. All but Cuevas and Rodriguez’s baby daughter understood that the groom has perhaps days to live.
“I love you,” Rodriguez whispered to his bride as they stood at the hurriedly decorated altar(圣坛). She put a trembling hand over her mouth and wept. Rodriguez, who has had two heart transplants resulting from a birth defect, made the decision over the weekend that he’d simply had enough. And so, as Rodriguez prepared for his hospice care (临终关怀) at home, he and the woman he’s loved rushed to prepare a wedding.
“He’s at peace with that and that’s what makes it easier for me,” Cuevas said. “When I think about my daughter, that’s when it breaks me down.” Cuevas first tried on her perfectly fitting wedding dress an hour before the ceremony. A hospital assistant spread the strawberry cake frosting Wednesday morning.
“Javier Rodriguez, I now pronounce the two of you husband and wife,” pastor (牧师)Stephanie Welsh said. “You may kiss...your...bride!” And he did, for a long time.
“Get a room!” someone yelled from the gathering.
“This is our room!” the bride yelled back.

Paragraph 1:
But only for that day.

Paragraph 2:
“I just want my son to be happy,” said the groom’s mother, Ana Silva.

Paragraph 1:
But only for that day. Cuevas and Rodriguez were expecting no more trips to the hospital, as they began the first day of the rest of their lives together. The special wedding was just the beginning of their marriage, which was the house they built together for their love. Maybe there was only a couple of days left for the groom, but fortunately he could call a happy end. Their dream was finally realized through years.
Paragraph 2:
“I just want my son to be happy,” said Rodriguez’s mother, Ana Silva. “He is marrying the love of his life. I know he loves her heart and soul, and they have a beautiful baby girl. Since we must face the frustrating result, we are supposed to live a satisfactory life at present, which makes it easier for all of us.” Everyone was impressed by the moving wedding. May the rest days in his life be as full of happiness and joy as this special day.
