【原】image 的家族到底有多大了，今天看了就明白

我相信大家也曾经被 image，imagine 或 imaginary 等类似 image 的单词所困扰过；因为 image，它们彼此或相关联，或互相干扰，给学习英语的人造成了不少困扰，今天就给一窝端了。

这四个单词因 image 而生，有些是从其他单词派生而来的，整个家族总共四个成员，首先从基因 image 说起。

一、Image，作名词时，常以“形象或图像”的意思出没，特别是“形象”，常用作可数名词，例如：

1. create/project/build an image 创造/树立一个形象

The company is aiming at projecting an image of being innovative and progressive.

这家公司的目标是树立创新和进步的形象。

2. change/improve/protect sb's image 改变/改善/保护某人的形象

Developers discussed how the impoverished town could improve its image and boost its redevelopment potential.

开发商们讨论了这个贫困小镇如何改善其形象，提高其重建潜力。

3. tarnish/hurt/destroy sb's image 玷污/伤害/破坏某人的形象

The Prime Minister never built his reputation by destroying government image.

首相从未通过破坏政府形象来建立自己的声誉。

4. good/positive/strong image 良好/积极/有影响的形象

When working in sales, it is important that you present a positive image.

在销售部门工作时，展现积极形象很重要。

5. a bad/poor/negative image 坏的/差的/负面的形象

The town is still trying to cast off its bad image.

该镇仍在努力摆脱其不良形象。

6. sb's public/private/professional image 某人的公共/私人/职业形象

These events give delegates the chance to network and improve their professional image.

二、imagine

Imagine 是一个及物动词，顾名思义，有它的地方，后面都接宾语，意为“想象，设想”等；常见的宾语类型有，名词、宾语从句或非谓语动词，其中非谓语动词包括动名词和不定式，例如：

I can't imagine life without the children now.

我现在无法设想没有了孩子们的生活。

Can you imagine how it feels to be blind?

你能想象失明的感觉吗？

She imagined herself sitting in her favorite chair back home.

她想象自己坐在家里她最喜欢的椅子上。

She imagined walking into the office and handing in her resignation.

她想象着自己走进办公室，递上辞呈。

I had imagined her to be older than that.

我本来以为她的年龄还要大一些。

三、imaginary

Imaginary，作形容词，意为“想象中的；幻想的；虚构的”，是从 imagine 衍生过来的，是十四个常见的形容词构词法中的一个，常用作前置定语，例如：

As a child I had an imaginary friend.

我小时候有一个想象中的朋友。

The story is set in an imaginary world.

这个故事以一个虚构的世界为背景。

四、imagination

Imagination，作名词，意为“想象力，想象”等，也是从 imagine 衍生过来的，常用作不可数名词，其中后缀 -ation 常用来表示名词，类似的还有 combination，determination，excitation 和 explanation 等，例如：

You’ve always had a very vivid imagination.

你总是有一个非常生动的想象力。

His writing lacks imagination. 

他的作品缺乏想象。

五、四者的联系

由此可见，这四个单词基本上没有可混淆的地方，因为它们的词性大部分不同，除了 image 和 imagination，但是它们的意思不一样，因此也应该不会被混淆。
