advance, 进步。ad-是ab-的变体，表“从，自...来（=from）”，后缀ance是ante的变体，表“前（=before）”，字母词根V，象形。前文提过，V=W=U，三个字母同源通转。V形表曲折，如via经由、取道（即拐弯走），way曲径，这里也指从...开始向前走，即进步、进展。

例句：

May I advance my opinion on the matter?

我可以提出对这件事的意见吗？

advantage 优势。ad-是ab-变体，表“自...来（=from）”，后缀ante与ance通转，表“前（=before）”，-age是名词后缀，所以，advantage与advance同根，优势就是比别人跑得快（如上图）。

例句：

She took advantage of the children's absence to tidy their rooms.

她趁孩子们不在时收拾了他们的房间。

disadvantage 不利因素；障碍；不便之处

ad-前缀，表朝向（=to），-ure是名词后缀，词根vent表来（=come），V形表转折，引申指“取道、拐弯走、到来、走”，这里指“冒险、走危险的地方（如上图）”。

例句：

He talked of his adventure all day long.

他终日不停地谈他的奇遇。

event，就是指大家走到一起，即公开活动、大事、事件

例句：

It had been the smallest event of all that had unsettled him the most.

使他感到最不安的事情是一件最微不足道的插曲。

eventually 最后；终于。-ual和-y是后缀，其中-ual=-ue+-al两个后缀组成。

例句：

The British were expecting the United States eventually to pick up the cheque.

英国人指望最后由美国去为英国慷慨解囊。

invent发明，in-前缀，表“里面”，所以invent就是走进去（看到别人看不到的东西），即发明、编造。

例句：

For Watt did not actually invent the steam engine.

因为瓦特并非真正发明蒸汽机的人。

invention 发明；创造；虚构；编造

例句：

Hitler complained that this single invention was the ruin of the U-boat campaign.

希特勒抱怨说，这一发明是潜艇战遭到覆灭的原因。

prevent 阻止。pre-前缀，表“前（=before）”，vent表走、来（=come），在前方放一个障碍（如上图），让你走不过去，即阻碍、阻止、妨碍。

例句：

But this did not prevent the parents unable to shake his head.

但这丝毫没有阻止父母不住地摇头。
