Has been silent means Has been out of work/service,Has stopped striking the hours 3) One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: 1.When we wake up(from sleep),we stop sleeping. 2.When we do something with a start,we do it in surprise,or with a shock,or something is surprising/startling us when we do it. 3) the clock was striking the hours! the clock is working again 在“英语阅读”中，我们需要和强调的不是“基础如何”，而是“现有基础”你发挥的如何？需要怎样的“基础”才能把英语“用起来”？估计很多人的“基础”学到大学本科都不发把“基础”发挥出来。 4) Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. 1.his watch means his wristwatch. 2.The bell struck 13 times means the clock was sounding 13 times,or made 13 sounds. 5) Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.
