奇怪的知识又增加了:Mr.是先生,Mrs.是女士,Mx.是什么?

1. The oldest English word that is still in use is "town".

最古老的英文单词,且仍在使用的,是"town" (小镇)。

2. The shortest and oldest word in the English language is "I".

最早又最短的单词是 I (我)。

3. The word "set" has the highest number of definitions.

set 一词拥有最多的词义。

4. If you wrote out all the numbers (eg. one, two, Three...),you would use the letter "b" until the word "billion".

如果你从one 开始写,在写到billion(十亿)之前,你是用不到 b 这个字母。

5. The longest common words without vowels is rhythms.

最长的没有包含元音字母的单词是 rhythms (节奏,旋律)。

6. The word "Goodbye" originally comes from an old English phrase meaning "God be with you".

Goodbye 这个单词来自古英语的一个短语,意思是"上帝与你在一起"。

▼ 所以,如果你是无神论者 (atheist),就不要再说 goodbye 了!这就好比"佛祖保佑你"这句话,并不是所有人都适合说。

6. The original name for butterfly is flutterby.

butterfly (蝴蝶) 最早叫 flutterby.

* flutter 现在的意思是"拍打翅膀",flutterby 就是"振翅飞过"之意,个人觉得这个单词更形象,更适合蝴蝶。

flutterby 这个单词现在基本不用了,不过,美国有个"蝴蝶节",用的还是这个单词:

7. The last alphabet added in the English language is not "z" But "j".

最后一个加入字母表的字母不是 z,而是 j。8. There is a word in the English language for "day after tomorrow" known as "overmorrow". But it was never used. Many of the dictionaries do not even list this word at all.

overmorrow 是代替  Day after tomorrow (后天),但是这个单词自发明以来,从未使用,甚至很多字典都没有将它列出来。9. Spoonfeed is the longest English word with all its letters in reverse alphabetical order.

spoonfeed (用汤勺喂) 是最长的,所有字母都用倒序排列的单词。

10. The word "testify" was derived from a time when men was required to swear on their testicles. The practice appears in the Biblel's Old Testament.

Testify (作证,证明)这个单词出现在《旧约》中,最早指男人发誓时,被要求对着自己的睾丸 (testicles)。11. Typewriter is one of the longest words you can type on the top row of a typewriter. Some others include "repertoire", "proprietor" and "perpetuity".

Typewriter (打字机)是你能在打字机第一排打出的最长单词之一,其它还有 repertoire (全部剧目/剧目),proprietor (业主,经营者),and perpetuity (永恒)。

12. No is the 84th most used word in English while yes stands at 486th.

No 在最常用的英语单词中排名第84,yes 则排在486。13. The opposite of Deja vu is Jamais vu.

Deja vu 的反义词是 Jamais vu.

* Deja vu 出自法语,也许你从未见过,但它确实是英语中比较实用的说法,意思为"似曾相识";

它的反义词  就比较少见了,算是冷知识吧!

Jamais vu 用来形容见到熟悉的东西,却一时想不起来的感觉,即"旧事如新"之意!14. The dot on top of the letter i and j is called tittle.

i 和 j 上面的点叫做 tittle.

* tittle 意思是"闲聊,小符号",不要与 title (标题) 混淆起来。15. Just like Mr. is used to address a man, Mrs. is used to address a woman, "Mx." is used to address genderqueen or non-binary people.

Mr. 用来指男性,Mrs. 指女性,Mx. 也用来指中性或者非二元性别。
