I didn’t start my English course until I became a junior high school student, so there was no doubt that I couldn’t catch up with my classmates because of my bad base.
Sadness and worries came to me when I realized I had difficulty in leaning the new subject. I wasn’t able to pay attention to listening to my teacher carefully. I couldn’t help crying and made a call to my mom to share my bad feelings.
My mom encouraged me not to give up and taught me the International Phonetic Alphabet. She even wrote down the Chinese phonetic alphabet to help me memorize the pronunciation of the words.
I’m not a talented girl, so I spent almost all of my free time practicing English by listening to the tape and repeating after it. Whenever it was, wherever I was, I kept the tape on. I listened carefully and I tried to recite the articles.
I tried and tried and finally made good progress in my English. At least, I could understand what the teacher said in class. And in the end, I could get good marks in the exams.
This taught me a good lesson. No pains, no gains. Hard work really makes progress. By the way, I am grateful to my mother because I couldn’t make it without my mom’s help. That was my English learning experience. And I’m looking forward to knowing something about yours.

When I was in primary school, only the kids who were in 4th grade were allowed to learn English. So I didn’t learn English until I was in 4th grade. Before that period, I was envious about my cousin because she was older than me and she could show off the English words she learned at school. What in my deepest memory was that after hearing my cousin say the English words she learned at school, I would copy them in my notebook secretly. Can you imagine that I even can’t spell those words? I think that is the beginning of my interest in English.
When I was in 4th grade, I went to a new school. All the things in that school were new to me, so I was a little bit shy in my class. Once in a English class, the English teacher asked us the Chinese meaning of “boy”. I thought I knew the meaning because I memorized the vocabulary before class. So I answered the question confidently. But the whole class burst into laughter, because I translated “boy” into the Chinese meaning of “man”. After that experience, I came to realize that if I love English, I should try harder.
Later I came to high school with that determination. I met my favorite English teacher who had great influence in my life. She always encouraged me when I was under great pressure. She treated me as a friend so I worked hard in English. I didn’t want to let her down. I did plenty of English exercises and read a large number of English articles as well. Before the college entrance examination, I got nearly full marks in English. Before graduation, we talked about what I wanted to major in. Now I become another her.
