约翰·迈克尔·卡特1950年出生于美国芝加哥，他从小就表现出对绘画的兴趣，15岁时开始与父亲E.L.卡特（E. L. Carter）一起学习，卡特是一位商业艺术家和插画家。高中毕业后，他就读于芝加哥的美国艺术学院。

卡特先生在肯塔基州路易斯维尔的肯塔基大学杰斐逊社区学院从事绘画和教授绘画已有十年，他还经常在全国各地的艺术工作室担任客座讲师，包括斯科茨代尔艺术家学校，达拉斯艺术联盟和辛辛那提艺术俱乐部。
