Odd Nerdrum was born in Switzerland in 1944. He returned to his Norwegian hometown of tosfield with his parents in 1945 and began to study painting at Steiner private school in Oslo in 1951. As a teenager, aud was fascinated by the historical collections in the Norwegian Museum and was deeply inspired.

In 1962, he followed the art trend in Europe at that time, experimented with various modernist painting styles, and participated in the painting exhibition held by the Norwegian Young Artists Association. His works were praised by the judges, and joined the National Artists Association in the same year. After 1962, he gradually doubted the form of modern works, but the works of Caravaggio and Rembrandt deeply moved him, so he began to describe his ideal world in detail in a classical way. In 1965, he came to Dusseldorf, Germany, under the guidance of Joseph Boyce.
