A placebo is a substance with no chemical effects that a doctor gives to a patient instead of a drug. Placebos are used when testing new drugs or sometimes when a patient has imagined their illness.

单词placebo来源于13世纪基督教中为逝去的人诵的晚祷词，在拉丁语中，祷词的第一个单词是placebo，原意是I shall please，表示“我愿意”，人们将这段祷词就称为placebo。

祷词一般会有意美化死者，于是人们就也将那种阿谀奉承的话称为placebo ，而将阿谀奉承这个行为称为sing placebos。

后来，18世纪的英国名医William Cullen大力宣扬“安慰疗法”，并用placebo来表示“安慰剂”，是一种无特定疗效的方法或药物，仅仅用来舒缓患者情绪。

现代医学已经证实安慰疗法的有效性，尤其是针对某些特定的疾病，安慰剂/疗法能够快速治愈或至少能极大地缓解病人的症状。从此后，安慰疗法得到广泛应用，而placebo（安慰剂） 这一术语也得到广泛应用。
