4．当用形容词（如English）表示一个国家的人民时，要用定冠词：

   the Chinese  the English  the French  the Dutch  the Spanish  the Japanese  

   但当复数形式表示一个国家或大洲的人民时则可用也可不用定冠词：

(the) Americans  (the)Puerto Ricans  (the) Italians  (the) Europeans

   6．序数词前用定冠词：

the first  the third   the fifth(5th) floor etc.

    但表示比赛或竞赛的名词时不用定冠词：

Reading:

On Sunday they went to church. They went to the church of Broadway. On the way back to the hotel they saw a shooting at the university on 19th Street and two students were taken to hospital.

1．在谈到诸如去Church, hospital, school, university, college, prison, court等地的主要目的或这些地方的用途时，不用定冠词：

On Sunday we went to church.

Two students were taken to hospital.

2．但是谈到具体的某个教堂或大学等时，用定冠词：

    We went to the Church on Broadway.

    We saw a shooting at the university.
