Learned to Use the Statistical Software SPSS is Exciting

1. The greatest aspect of this course and most useful to me personally is our intensive use of SPSS software and coming to understand it deeply enough to use it on our own. I believe using this software is the most important part of our graduate degree education, and it should be contained in many more classes than what is currently available. However, over the course of a semester, we have become proficient in doing our own research and creating a research report based on the data processing that we did ourselves in a hypothetical research situation. I spent a great deal of time learning about the concepts for this course through the textbook; yet, the most comprehensible application of all the concepts and accompanying formulas came through the professor's weekly videos that he made himself. These videos were enormously useful, and it would not be possible to understand most of the content included without those videos.

2. Doing the SPSS practice was by far my favorite experience of the entire course. I found the videos that the professor made quite helpful and was easily able to follow along with my own SPSS software. When I was finished with the work, I was able to understand everything about the concepts utilized by SPSS because I had gone over the work already with the lecture videos as well. The lecture videos helped me enormously as well after reading the text, for they put together all of the pertinent information that I needed to know from the chapter and allowed me to utilize the concepts in my own work.

3. Taking tests and quizzes on D2L has always been a pleasant experience. Though, in most classes, there are not easily accessible YouTube videos provided on the D2L platform. In that regard, this professor goes above and beyond to assure all of his students have access to everything that is needed. Everything in the class was also easy to find in D2L as it was all arranged by week.

4. The virtual discussions on the "final report" were also a happy highlight that I am glad to have taken part in. The VoiceThread software is easy to navigate and provides for a seamless transition between the post’s pages. I was able to easily upload my PowerPoint presentation and my audio comments were not difficult to do at all. I had only a little trouble finding where the student gallery view was, but I had accessed it before. Therefore, I was able to figure it out on my own. I recommend the VoiceThread platform for all Sociology classes as it added a missing component of being in a completely online class.

5. Finally, the "weekly briefing" helped us focus as if we had a professor up in front of us every time we logged in to the class on a new week. We were updated on scores and new assignments that needed to be completed. I enjoyed hearing from the professor at any time I needed as well. His availability through email was a great component of this class. Finally, we could even add actual GSS full data sets and the ability to create our own fully publishable academic journal material. Thanks for your time.

6. Throughout the semester, I spent an average of 10-15 hours each week completing the assigned readings and SPSS exercises, practicing the SPSS work, and studying the concepts in general. I worked very hard throughout this course, making sure I built my comprehension and ability to apply the learnings to practical research examples. The video content, both the videos recorded by Dr. Sun and those sourced for the class were very helpful during this course. Each week, the video content and "weekly briefing" added to and highlighted the key concepts for the new week and often provided highlights or gaps from the previous week as well.

7. I truly enjoyed learning how to use the SPSS software and spent a lot of time running through exercises and examples from the text and from tutorials on the internet. After this course, I feel prepared to use what I have learned so far and continue to build on these skills over the course of my upcoming career. This knowledge has helped me feel much more confident in my ability to conduct social research, analyze the data, and interpret the results.

8. Using D2L has always been easy and clear; all weekly resources (videos, reading assignments, schedule of assignments, and other content) are easy to access and interact with within the classroom environment. The quiz and exam environments were also not complicated and I did not have any trouble with them. I find that D2L offers us various ways to interact with the course and materials and I enjoy that very much. I also enjoy the VoiceThread components, both as a presenter and commenter. VoiceThreads give us a great way to interact with one another virtually, which is nice since we are all attending virtually. It might have been nice to have a few more VoiceThread assignments throughout the course but I am happy to have used the environment when we did.

9. The "weekly agenda" was one of the most valuable resources each week throughout the course. I reviewed the agenda nearly every day of the week, both to make sure I was keeping track of the schedule of assignments and to review the points offered in the agenda to help reinforce learning and my own comprehension. I feel that the agenda and "weekly briefing" were bonus content from Dr. Sun each week and I hope he continues to do these things with future courses. The “Rate this Week” surveys were a great way to provide Dr. Sun with feedback from the perspective of the student. I trust that Dr. Sun reviews the feedback provided by students and incorporates that feedback when and where it makes the most sense. In my opinion, offering the weekly agenda, weekly briefly, and collecting the weekly ratings and feedback from students allows trust to be built between themselves (individually and as a group) and Dr. Sun. Working through the course feels more like we’re building a partnership with Dr. Sun and that we’re working towards developing our professional skills than simply taking a course in the abstract.

10. Relative to other courses throughout my time at TAMUC, Dr. Sun provides the most communication, feedback, and learning resources each week. As a result, I feel that my level of comprehension from this course exceeds that of other courses; and this comprehension enables me to feel more prepared to apply what I learned in my professional career. I truly hope that Dr. Sun continues to facilitate his courses in similar ways and that he continues to challenge graduate students to the degree to which he has done this semester, as the goal should be to fully enable graduate students to become professionals within the field of sociology.

11. I have taken two other courses involving SPSS, but they have been taken years apart. This course gave me a refresher on statistics needed to analyze SPSS along with how to use SPSS. For every chapter assigned, I spent at least 1-hour reading to comprehend. Then I spent another hour or two on videos. In total, with all assignments, quizzes, videos, and readings, I spent about 5-6 hours each week on this course, more if there were two chapters. This class was the most challenging for me this semester, but I enjoyed it. I felt I was given all the resources necessary to understand the concepts and topics for that week. The lectures and readings were necessary to complete the quizzes and assignments. I definitely tried my best in this course.

12. I watched every video and every lecture for this course. They were easily embedded into the weekly assignments, so it was easy to access and play with. I did not have any trouble watching them. The extra SPSS videos were not as helpful as the videos that were describing concepts or topics. Dr. Sun’s SPSS was the most helpful and incredibly easy to follow. The videos were helpful when I needed more help or a different explanation on a specific topic. The lecture videos were great, especially when Dr. Sun provided an example of an equation we were needing to understand.

13. SPSS was very straightforward and easy to do. The hardest part for me was understanding how to write out the answers to questions. I also missed something or did not clearly understand what I was supposed to be described in the answer. But doing the actual analysis was very easy. My experience in the usage of D2L (such as taking Diagnostic tests online; taking quizzes, taking an online exam, and exam practice; reading chapters, reading articles on some topics, etc.)

14. I was really nervous about the "data analysis report" because I did not take the class prior to this one SOC575, I believe. I was surprised to learn that some students may already have a topic and plan in mind for this data analysis. Plus, I had trouble all semester with describing and explaining my analysis. And the video presentation was hard to do because I am not sure if my analysis is correct, so I may be presenting the wrong information, which makes me feel anxious. I would have much rather had no video presentations.

15. The "weekly briefly" was great. It reminded me of the prior week's accomplishments and future accomplishments. It also reminded me that Dr. Sun was there. I appreciated that there were a lot of opportunities for points even if they were small amounts. It allowed me to gain points throughout the semester. It allowed me to be confident when I submitted my exam and report that I would pass the course. I did like that I knew my place throughout the semester because I knew where my expected grade would be at the end. The only problem I had is that the last two weeks of class counted for almost half the points, which was overwhelming. It was a great course, and one of the best I had in my graduate degree. I learned so much!
