来中国说英语就像吃火锅点清汤，简直没感受到这里的文化。我是菲利普，我只说四川话，吃火锅只吃红汤！

There are a lot of foreigners who can speak Chinese very well, but very few have mastered the Chengdu dialect.

但是能把成都话说的很好的就不太多了

不同的音调表达的意思千差万别

可能很多外省人都不能说好成都话

但今天，我们要介绍一位新朋友给大家

除了普通话

他也能说一口地道的成都话

而且凭借一首成都话说唱蹿红网络

他有一句名言就是

The key difference is in the meaning created by the different tones.

This is perhaps because Chinese people who come to Chengdu can’t speak the local dialect.

But today, I want to introduce a new friend to everyone.

Not only can he speak Mandarin,

He can also speak like a Chengdu native,

And he’s rocketed to fame in the local rap scene,

Filip has a famous saying:

“Speaking English in China is like ordering a plain, tasteless hotpot. Speaking Mandarin in Chengdu is the equivalent of eating two-flavor hotpot- you’re halfway there, but not going all the way. Speak the Chendu dialect in Chengdu and you’re experiencing the real, spicy hotpot.”

In this article, our Polish boy, Filip, will reveal to us his secret to mastering the Chengdu dialect.

菲利普：“大家好，我叫菲利普，今年26岁，我在成都这个地方已经待了三年半，我喜欢直接说自己是四川本地老外，因为我就是喜欢本地的文化和语言。”

菲利普：“学成都话很难，但是受身边环境和我老师的影响，加上四川说唱，让我很有动力，学的很快！”

Filip:

“Hello everyone, my name is Filip and I’m 26 years old. I’ve been in Chengdu for three and a half years now. I would like to say I’m a 'local foreigner’ because I enjoy the local culture and language that much.”

“As for the Chengdu dialect, I really feel the uniqueness of it. I feel it when I’m walking down the street-how dynamic the Chengdu dialect it is. I have a saying that “coming to China to speak English is like eating plain, tasteless hotpot” If you come this city and don’t try to speak the dialect, then don’t expect to get a full experience of what Chengdu’s local culture has to offer. I’m Filip, I only eat spicy hotpot!”

'It’s quite hard to learn and grasp the Chengdu dialect, but both my environment and teacher as well as my interest in Sichuan rap has motivated me to learn the local dialect as quickly as possible.”

Last year, Filip won the audience’s applause after his performance of “Chengdu Leisure” at the “Chengdu Foreigner Spring Festival.”

Filip has also collaborated with local artists to perform the local Sichuan song, 'Tianfu.”

From tea shops to Wannianchang, from Hongpailou to Balizhuang, one can feel the unique Chengdu style in the lyrics, and Filip's interpretation of the songs really made it come alive.

菲利普也和本土创作者合作，演绎了一首四川话说唱的《天府》。从茶店子到万年场，从红牌楼到八里庄，成都的风情尽在歌词里，而菲利普的演绎把这首歌彻底带火了。

Filip believes that, for foreigners, the tones of Chengdu dialect is the hardest to learn. But he also added this: “If you are truly interested in mastering a new skill, then you must practice and find a way to make the learning experience enjoyable. For example, I learned the Chengdu dialect mainly through Sichuan style rap. I like Chengdu, and I like to rap. So I combined the two!”

菲利普认为，对于外国人来说，成都话的声调学起来是最难的，但是如果喜欢一件事情就要去做，把这件变成很好玩的，比如学四川话主要是通过说唱。喜欢成都话，喜欢说唱，把两者结合起来，在菲利普这里就有了更多的可能，除了川话版的说唱《天府》之外，还有《成都悠闲》、《四川麻辣酱》、《耍在成都》......

现在菲利普一边在成都教授英语，一边玩音乐，他甚至加入了本土说唱团队“耍家帮”到各地演出，享受语言和音乐带给他的感觉。

Filip is now teaching English in Chengdu and is part of a local rap group 'Playing Home Help.” The group performs in various places and venues, where everyone can come together to experience the combination of language and music.
