the Mountain Villa of Ten Thousands Views

Welcome to “the Mountain Villa of Ten Thousand Views”. This is an inner garden of the Tiger Hill, the one of the most famous tourist Attractions in Suzhou. This garden is specially for the exhibition of Suzhou Bonsai. It was built and opened to the public in 1982, covering a big area of about 17000㎡.

What is bonsai? Bonsai is an idea to use small plants and rocks s to imitate a natural landscape. Each bonsai work is created with various techniques and materials which has its unique style and composition. This garden, known for its thousands of exquisite bonsai on display, hence the name “Mountain Villa of Ten Thousand Views”.

Firstly let’s have a look of the entrance. There is a huge brick carving gate frame which is just like a frame of a Chinese watercolor painting .  you can see a water pond lying next to a pebbled path, with two springs streaming down along cliffs . And the brick tablet overhead on the gate frame with four Chinese characters “like mountain like water”, appropriately describes this delicate landscape.Going through this gate is like walking in to a painting. And here begins the tour of bonsai garden.

Today “Bonsai” is only a Japanese term while inChina, it is wildly known as 'Peng Jing”, a landscape in a pot. Many Europeans think Bonsai is fromJapan. But actually it is fromChina. Bonsai originated in Tang Dynasty, about 1300 years ago. In Song Dynasty it was first taken toJapanby Japanese envoys, and then brought fromJapanto Europe andAmericain 1940’s. That’s why it is known as“Bonsai” in the rest of the world except inChina.

Chinese bonsai is mainly divided into two types: landscape bonsai and tree bonsai. The first section we see here is the tree bonsai exhibition area. There are about 600 pieces of bonsai works. The youngest one is 50 years old while the oldest one is 400 years old. This Bonsai Garden was built on the hillside of the Tiger Hill, where bonsai works blend in with the surroundings harmoniously. You can see the magnificent Leaning Pagoda at the back; several garden styled pavilions and halls scattered up and down, forming the exhibition area into three different levels. All these indicate the development of bonsai which has borrowed a lot from the art and skills of garden designing.

The materials of tree bonsai come from two sources, one is planting seeds or grafting, the other one is being removed from a forest.  For example, there is an oldest bonsai work in the center of this exhibition area, called “Crouching Tiger and Coiling Dragon” .Use your imagination, the top part looks like crouching tiger while the bottom part looks like coiling dragon. In 1971, this tree was still growing in a small village in Suzhou. A famous master Zu Zi an,  found this tree and loved it so much. So he exchanged it with a bicycle from the owner. And now, here it is, the king of this garden.

Bonsai is often made by pines plums bamboo and so on. These trees can grow very old but always full of vitality. It is a combination of the spirit of Chinese classical gardens, watercolor landscape paintings and flower-bird paintings. So people said bonsai is a picture, a poem and even a spirit ofChina.

Walking along the path, we will see all kinds of landscape bonsai. They are decorated with different types of rocks. They are small in size but delicate in shapes.

Landscape bonsai is created in principle of traditional Chinese landscape painting, which is “mountain higher than trees, horses taller than people”.

Chinese people love bonsai, crazy about bonsai, not only because it’s a fun recreation or an elegant art. But also because bonsai is like the spirit of our nation, ancient, vibrant, creative and tough.
