3. The sunrise in some parts of China is at 10 am.

Although China is a vast country, there is only one time zone - China Standard Time. This means that, in western China, the sunrise may be at 10AM! This means that when it is 6 o'clock in the nation's capital, it is 6 o'clock in Kashgar, nearly 3,000 miles further west.

4. Elder Rights Act:

If you have parents over 60, it is illegal to visit them from time to time. This is definitely one of the most interesting facts about China because in many other countries the elderly are forgotten or sent to nursing homes.

6. Chinese New Year celebrations last 15 days

First, Chinese New Year and European or American New Year are not celebrated on the same date. The first day of the year is the new moon between January 21 and February 20, so every year is different. Second, the celebration lasts for 15 days instead of just 1 New Years celebration like in the West.

7. Fortune cookies are not a traditional Chinese custom

8. China has the largest standing army in the world

Do you think the US has the largest military in the world? Take a second guess. The mighty superpower China has 2,183,000 personnel who can be sent to fight if necessary. That's almost a million more than the U.S. Army has active duty personnel.

9. In 2030, it is estimated that there will be 30-40 million more men in China than women

This is a big problem for China because of the one-child policy that has been in place for decades. Since each family can only have one child, this leads many parents to want a son rather than a daughter.

China is still a very traditional country, as parents only want one son, this leads to the problem of about 30-40 million men who cannot find Chinese wives to marry because they already have them.

10. China's railway lines are so wide and long that they can circle the earth twice.

China is the fourth largest country in the world by area, but the railways are widely spread throughout the country. In fact, China's railways are so extensive that they can circle the earth once, not once, but twice!

11. Cosmetics must be tested on animals

This may not be one of the most exciting facts about China, but it's interesting because this is completely forbidden and banned in Europe. In 2018, trials on animals were unnecessary, as trials on "fake skin" and other technologies could be cheap and effective.

13. Facebook has been banned in China since 2009.

But at least 95 million Chinese users still evade the blockade through various VPN services. That said, most people use other social media channels such as Baidu, WeChat, and Sina Weibo.

They even have their own version of YouTube called Youku.

14. Wang, Li, Zhang are the most common surnames

They make up about 21% of the population, which means that one in five people will have a surname of Wang, Li or Zhan, which is actually called a surname in China.

15. One in five people in the world is Chinese

If you think learning Chinese is not important, then you may need to reconsider that idea. About 1/5 of the world's people are Chinese, which is equivalent to 20% of the world's total population.

While most of them live within the People's Republic of China, that theoretically means that if you meet 5 people, at least one of them is Chinese.
