This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca (卡萨布兰卡). My Friend Mike and I were going tovisit Abdel, a young man we'd worked with on a Volunteer project in Kenitra, anindustrial city on the Morccan (摩洛哥) coast. He'd been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a fewdays now, and since he had no telephone, he'd written down his address and nameand told us to just show up---his mother and sisters were always at home.

Apparently, theaddress he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand. Whenwe got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions.Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a windingroad. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel'ssister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us wherethey lived.

Soon a girl of aboutsixteen emerged from the house. Surprisingly, she didn't look like Abdel atall. Still, I'd seen other families where children didn't look alike, so Ididn't give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother,sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. Wewere shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdelwas out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us andmade shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.

An hour passed, morefamily members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact thatnone of them looked a thing like our fiend. After another two hours had passedwith no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in theirkitchen next door. “Soon' was the only response I got when I inquired as sto what time Abdel might come back.

Finally we heard the words we had been waiting forfrom the mother, “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.”Mike and I rose to our feet and went to the living room. There, to our surprise, stood a young man we didn’t know. Gazing at each other, we all looked embarrassed.Then, the young man broke the silence and shook hands with us. After greeting him, we sincerely apologized for having made a mistake and bothered his family so much. We told him we were looking for another “Abdel” who once worked with us in Kenitra and who left us his address before parting. 85 W

I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me inKenitra and showed it to the new Abdel. He smiled and told us he happened to know this Abdel. He offered to drive us tohis home, which was about ten minutes’ ride. So friendly and hospitable was he that we were soon on good terms with each other. Shortly afterwards, we got to the Abdel’s that we had intended to visit. Knowing about our funny experience, our old friend almost laughed to tears. Anyway, the two Abdels both made us feel at home. 76W
