Option B | Within me there lay an invincible summer.

Who is Sheryl Sandberg? Sheryl has worked for Treasury Department, Google, and Facebook (now Meta). There’s no doubt that Sheryl is an outstanding female icon in Silicon Valley. 

However, she is not only famous or respected for her achievements in business, but her influence in feminism. I’m also one of the girls and women who are greatly inspired by Sheryl, since the very first TED speech given by Sheryl on “Why we have too few women leaders”, to the latest book Option B co-written by Sheryl and her friend Professor Adam Grant. 

In this book, Sheryl shared her emptiness and sorrow after the sudden death of her husband Dave, also how she and her family overcame hardship, sought resilience and Option B. 

The good news is that Sheryl remarried on August 22, not long before I read this book. Congratulations!

Here're the notes I'd like to share with all from the powerful and informative book. Let's begin.

1. Still, Dave gave me the experience of being deeply understood, truly supported, and completely and utterly loved.

2. “Option A is not available. So let’s just kick the shit out of Option B.”

3. Psychologist Martin Seligman found that three P’s can stunt recovery: (1) personalization; (2) pervasiveness; (3) permanence…

4. “Part of every misery,” C.S. Lewis wrote, is “misery’s shadow … the fact that you don’t merely suffer but have to keep on thinking about the fact that you suffer.”

5. Adam and his colleague Jane Dutton found that counting our blessings doesn’t boost our confidence or our effort, but counting our contributions can.

6. “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”

7. Tedeschi and Calhoun have a slightly softer (one could say less Nietzschean) take: “I am more vulnerable than I thought, but much stronger than I ever imagined.”

8. In the words of an old adage: “Let me fall if I must fall. The one I become will catch me.”

9. “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
