Phonics is a method for teaching people how to read and write an alphabetic language (such as English, Arabic or Russian). It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language (phonemes), and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) or syllables of the written language. In English, this is also known as the alphabetic principle or the Alphabetic code. 自然拼读（Phonics）也称为自然拼音，字母拼读及自然发音，是一种用于英语阅读和写作的英语教学方法，它通过提高学生的音素觉察—听到、识别和操作音素的能力—教会他们对应发音和表示发音的拼写模式（字位）。 自然拼读的目的是在让读者可以根据拼写及声音的规则，将英文单字念出来。其拼写及声音的规则是在单字的字母和字母之间的，因此是一种次词汇（sublexical）的教学方法，和全语言教育以单字为基础一层一层往上，教授阅读的方式恰好相反。 英文字母和发音之间的关系有时会不符合基础语音教学法规则，因此有些教学方式也会将一些常见，不一定符合规则的字列出，这些词被称为“视觉词”（sight word），直接记忆其发音，让学习者利用基础语音教学法及sight word一起学习。
