Everyone says to keep your articles short, not too long, people's attention spans don't last that long. I think that's right, but I'd love to try a super long article. No one recognizes me anyway, and I'm not famous, so I'm going to write another record-breaking long article, no more installments. I can't wait to learn something and read it all at once, just like a drama. I don't want to wait for updates.

If you've read this, I can't repay you, so I'll give you a 'self-learner's tool', I suggest you bookmark it and forward it.

From input to output

I've been talking about writing about the Feynman method of study and the practice of card note writing for a long time, and here it is. After reading this article, if you are interested in reading the original, there are many details that can be implemented for reasons of space, so I will not go into detail here, here to summarize with you how I practice. May give you some inspiration.

Every time I learn something new it's a reworking of my mind. For example, when I was learning to use Obsidian and the card notation method, I had a hard time turning around. But 'metacognition' always reminds me not to rush and to think about how the links are made. At first I couldn't figure out how the links between the cards would work on Fei Shu, so I thought and thought about it. ...... Eh, after a lot of thinking, I did figure it out,

I learned about the card note writing method many years ago and felt it was tailor-made for me and I loved it. Because the card note writing method is based on accumulation.

As you can see ,如你所见,这文章是先在飞书文档里写好了再复制粘贴到微信公众号的,用过很多软件还是更喜欢飞书.

As you can see, as you can see, this article was first written in the Fishu document and then copied and pasted into the WeChat public number, because I prefer the Fishu function. Of course, there are so many ways to practice learning and writing methods that you can choose according to your personal preference, so let's take the Fishu document as a chestnut 🌰.

What is the card note writing method?

Image

The Feynman Method is almost deified, and frankly my ears have become so calloused that I don't want to talk about it for the last year. To put it bluntly, it's the physicist Richard Feynman's highly effective method of learning that you can learn, use, and use well, and it's also known as the best learning method ever.

If you learn and then give it back to the teacher, you're really not as good as the guy next door who plays games every day. So it's necessary to learn how to learn more effectively first, and then to learn again. I've read the book several times to write this article, and I've summed it up for you in three words: 'visualisation'.

You can visualise the content of the book in any way you like. Whether you tell it to someone else, use a mind map, or make it into an instructional video, you are forced to learn it all by way of output.

But it's not easy, you have to go through the book and look it up again and again in order to make the output, and you have to change several software programs just to make notes before you finally choose FeiBook. Whether you like to make tables or mind maps, formulas or flowcharts, collect information or inline web pages, or even add attachments or link to other cards ...... The key is that it's completely free, which is fantastic.

What is the card note writing method?

Image

It's all about modularising your notes and interlinking them so that you can combine them as you go along and write an original article in no time at all.

The brain can't store a lot of short term memory and you'd be mad to remember every change to a document. The brain is meant to think, so it's a waste of time to memorise things. The card note-taking method is the equivalent of adding a plug-in to your brain, allowing you to think outside of it with a pen and leave the storage to the cards.

The essence of the card note-writing method is to publish valuable content, whether you're copying from the original or just a few words of inspiration, which will eventually be distilled into your own words and saved with tags. Individual notes are scattered dots that are linked together by tags to create insight and wisdom, so the more notes you accumulate, the more valuable they become. Here's an image to illustrate this

It is not as easy as you might think, but it is a change of mindset that is equivalent to changing the source code of a computer operating system.

The page ...... will open when it is created

At first you may be a little uncomfortable, thinking that you can edit in the software like a Word document, but now it's on the web? But as you get deeper into it, you'll see that there are so many benefits. The advantage of having a web version (HTML) is that it's universal. The notes you write are not limited to devices, they are automatically saved on your phone (Android, iOS), computer (Windows, macOS, Linux), tablet (iPadOS) and your friends' participation in ......, and are synchronised across all platforms. This way, you won't have to go through the pain of forgetting to save or corrupt your file and then writing it all over again.

As you can see, the new knowledge space is blank, and there is an example document in it which you can delete entirely.

Fishu documents support markdown syntax and most document formats, and can be interspersed with references to each other. There is a beautiful layout. As a graphic designer, I really love it. Here are some of the results:

Kaman Method of Learning

I made up the name, now let's organize our thoughts.

The Feynman method of learning is all about output forcing input (using your hands and pencil) and visualising content (using Fei Shu as a software to organise your notes and visualise them). The card note-taking method allows you to chain your notes, to add a physical plug to your brain, to think outside your head. You write out the process of reading and outsource the process of thinking, without taking up valuable brain memory. The plug-ins can be combined at will to form an insightful and original opinion.

The accumulation of card notes is divided into three sections:

  1. 闪念笔记,只是随意记录,还没有进行总结和打标签,更没有写参考来源的笔记;

  1. flash notes, only randomly recorded, not yet summarised and labelled, not to mention notes on reference sources;

  1. from the bottom up, no deliberate direction, randomly recorded, gradually forming a framework. Of course, this framework is random and grows naturally, based on what interests you. The advantage is that you have a continuous motivation to learn, but the disadvantage is that it is not easy to form a systematic framework, or takes a long time. It is suitable for recording flashbacks and inspiration, so it is called scattered notes, which is also the method of the 'card note writing method', but not applicable to the Feynman method of learning, because this method requires a holistic understanding of what you want to learn at the beginning. So I have added a way to do this ...... top down

  1. 从上而下,先有整体框架,对知识的整体有个了解,再细分到每一个细节,就是有个明确目的学习路径(比如职业规划),按路径一个个的去完成即可,缺点就是容易从入门到放弃,这个叫作框架笔记;

  1. From the top down, the first overall framework, an understanding of the overall knowledge, and then subdivided into each detail. That is, a clear purpose learning path (such as career planning). According to the path to completing one by one can, the disadvantage is that it is easy to start to give up. This is called the framework of notes;

As to whether you want to learn from the top down or the bottom up, it depends on the actual situation. In practice, both approaches are used, top-down for systematic learning and bottom-up for extended learning.

Image

This is now clear, you just need to create three new blank documents:

ImageImage

ImageImage

Card note template and process

Next, take a look at the template for the card notes. The plus sign to the right of the 'Flash Notes' document creates a new document, which is equivalent to a sub-folder of this folder.

Image

I've shared it in the template library, quote my name to get it.

ImageImage

The following is the standard template for card notes:

Image

As the subtitle indicates, all notes are standardised and organised for one purpose only: to publish valuable ideas.

You just need to follow the template step by step to improve it, but be careful, a card only records a point, more than one is not easy to label, later notes are simply impossible to find.

Now we come to the first part,

Flashback Notes

Image

Here you can record what you think, copy the original text, mind map, screenshots, photos, websites, attachments, tables ...... and write as much as you like in this area. To a large extent, you can write whatever comes to mind and read it with a pen, which tests whether you have really understood it and fills in the gaps, so that it sinks in and is summarised.

Literature Notes

Of course, after taking notes in a haphazard manner, it is time to summarise what is known in books as bibliographical notes:

Image

This area requires you to summarise your flash notes in your own words, be brief and concise, state the central idea of the card note and extract 6 or so keywords for the title of the card, which can be easily tagged and associated later.

打标签

Tagging

Image

After summing up, think about what topics this note is related to, or similar, and if you don't know what to name the card titles or tags, think backwards and ask yourself, if I were to find it later, what would be the most likely keywords? For example, I have these categories,

Image

Image

Image

To tag a card, just type in the @ symbol and then the title of the card you want to associate with it. The @ symbol can be associated with a document, a friend or even a chat group.

Image

当然我们才刚开始,这些文档还没有,无法关联,可以先新建个空白的文档,假如是散乱的笔记,就到「永久散点笔记」下新建空白文档;

Of course, we have only just started and these documents are not yet available and cannot be linked, so you can create a blank document first, or if it is a scattered note, go to 'Permanent Scattered Notes' and create a new blank document;

ImageImage

Image

Now go back to the new note you created and go to 'Tags' to make the connection

ImageImage

All notes are connected in more than two dimensions, linking directly from different locations, generating insights at any time, and ultimately generating wisdom from the links, so that wisdom can be traced

References

Image

This section provides some standard formats for writing references to make it look more professional, but of course you can throw in a URL if you feel like it, and if you are quoting someone else's content, please make sure you write it clearly and respect intellectual property rights.

Once you have completed all the items in the card note template, it is ready to be archived.

Place it in the card box

Now we drag the notes we have just created into the relevant document file.

ImageImage

What can I do if I have more and more notes at a later stage and can't drag them directly under the relevant document? You can 'right click' - 'move'

ImageImage

How's that for fun?

Here, our notes are archived. The simplified process is 'New card notes' - 'Refine content' - 'Place in card box', which is the basis for your future output.

Let's take another example 🌰 Let's say I'm taking a note, I've perfected all the items, and I've put it in the study folder

Image

Image

It just occurred to me that this is an act of compound interest and has been tagged again

Image

Flash notes, documentary notes, permanent notes ...... and finally the card box. This order does not have to be strictly adhered to.

When you have enough time, you can write and label your thoughts and insights in your flashcards and save them in the card box.

For those of you who are observant, you will notice that I have used the content of this note as an example in this tutorial, and yes, I have accumulated many relevant notes before writing this tutorial to produce such substantial output.

But then you ask, how do you know it's ready to be exported?

Occasional view of the relationship map

For every note with @, Fishu will add a 'relationship diagram' at the end

Image

Load up the relationship chart to see which tags are getting bigger and bigger, the cards it is associated with are the outline of your writing, put these outlines in order and it's an article that is full of content that is valuable and is also original to you.

Image

In this process, you will find relationships that you did not find before, which will give you 'inspiration' again. The more you organize, the more you feel that you have a lot to say, and before you know it, you have written so much that you can't believe it until it's late and you turn off your computer.

If you accumulate them and one day you suddenly find that a card is associated with other cards in a group of notes, you can use 'glue words' to link them together to make a very intelligent article.

It's all about good writing and accumulation. A good approach to writing is one that gives you a constant flow of ideas and you can't stop writing. Every day you write a lot just by organising your 'card box', and you get a lot of ideas flowing in. By writing down your thoughts in fragments and summarising them, you'll end up with a spring of insight and wisdom, and no shortage of topics to write about.

Learn and use it for yourself

To a large extent, I write whatever comes to mind, combining it outside my head and outsourcing bits and pieces of information to a tool, the Fishu document.

And you'll find that the connections between the notes are 'three-dimensional', directly linking directly from different locations, generating insights at any time, and ultimately generating wisdom from the links

When you work with relationship diagrams you will find it interesting to have a sudden idea, write it down and tag it, then when you have something to say on another tag, you immediately click on that tag to add it ......

It's all about good writing and accumulation, and a good approach to writing is one that gives you a constant stream of ideas that you can't stop writing.

People always die, and the final verdict depends on how many cards are written in a lifetime, and how those cards are put together, in different ways, to form different lives.

A life that is planned from the start is painful and uninteresting to maintain. It's like going on a trip, you don't go in a straight line and come back quickly, the journey is part of the trip. Writing each card is a part of life.

The more notes you take, the more ideas you will have. The more notes you collect, the more useful they are.

Here are some examples of 'bottom-up' practices:

One day I was asked to give a talk on learning. No problem, just drag a document to the end to see the relationship map, search for the keyword 'learning' and the relevant notes would be presented to me. These nodes of notes can be double clicked to go directly to the editing, also known as 'card inspired cards'. If some notes are not shown in the chain, double click in the margin to load more content.

Of course, there are many faster loading options than the relationship chart, such as Obsidian, so it's up to you to choose. See below for a moving image of how it works:

It's very intuitive, isn't it? I then wrote directly under the 'Learning' document, ordered the associated notes, strung them together with 'glue words' and I was done with a dry presentation.

Image

Image

You can also share it as you see fit, so you don't have to worry about others not being able to see it, as the page version is not device specific. You can also set permissions before sharing, depending on the permissions, so that the person receiving the link can only see it but not copy it, or even take a screenshot of it, ensuring the safety of the article.

Image

Learning from the top down

The following is a 'top-down' learning exercise:

For example, if I want to learn GitHub, I can find a book and use the 'card note template' to create a table of contents according to its chapters, and write in the 'flash notes' area as I read, and then summarise the central ideas with my own understanding under 'Summary' after reading a chapter.

Image

Image

Another reason for me to choose Fei Shu is the ability to correct errors, it is a punctuation level, where to capitalize, where to abbreviate, whether it is a comma or a full stop, what grammatical errors ...... has arranged clearly.

Image

Image

I didn't realize I'd written so much, but I had to write a very detailed tutorial on babysitting, so we'll be able to use the 'Kaman Method' to learn everything and use it well. It's like a life hangover.

Finally, keep an eye out for shortcuts, but of course you don't need to remember them all, just remember one every now and then. It will save you a lot of time and improve your experience. I'll probably write a tutorial on GitHub next, so if you're interested, follow along!

Image

Image

Image

Image

These are just a few of the features you'll find, and more will be added from time to time. I'll probably be writing a tutorial on GitHub next, to get involved in the global collaboration network, so if you're interested, follow along!
