Storytelling Stages

3
Staging
1. The audience will make certain assumptions about
the relationships in the scene.
2. The actors will respond emotionally in direct line
with the desired emotional responses of the
characters.
You can enhance the dynamics of a scene by staging it
in such a manner that two things will happen:

Basic Approach
5
Camera Coverage
?
Evaluate the dynamics of the scene.
?
Watch the interrelationship between the
characters.
?
Decide what your audience needs to see at
each point in the scene.
Add to the scene rather than merely recording it.
6
The Camera
Active or Passive
?
An active camera moves on its own - it has a
point of view and an attitude.
?
A passive camera will only respond to the
movement or energy within the scene - it is
nonintrusive, respectful and cautious.
7
Running a First Rehearsal
1. Evaluate the performance.
2. Decide on the blocking.
3. Figure out your coverage.
4. Check backgrounds and foregrounds.
5. Run the scene until everyone, including the actors,
feel comfortable with the staging, lighting and
sound demands.
6. Release the set to the crew.
8
Bracketing
Bracketing is adjusting the performance just slightly on
either side of the original performance.
More passion - Less passion
More resentment - Less resentment
More anger - Less Anger
9
Using Music to Set the Mood
?
Playing the theme from Rocky just before shooting
an action sequence.
?
Playing a “love theme” just before shooting a very
intimate and delicate scene.
If you used music during rehearsal to set a mood or
tone, then it is an easy transition to bring it into the
production process.

Dailies
?
Have I shot (and printed) a sufficient range of
performance for the scene?
?
Have I covered it sufficiently?
?
Have I recorded enough details?
?
Is there any reason to return to this scene for a
re-shoot?
