2. New freshmen must be admitted to USU in good standing in order to qual-

ify for this major.

3. Transfer students from other institutions need a 2.75 total GPA and a 3.0

GPA in all music therapy courses in order to qualify for this major.

4. Students transferring from other USU majors need a 2.75 total GPA in or-

der to qualify for this major.

The Program

The Department of Music at Utah State University offers a course of study

leading to the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Therapy.

Students who successfully complete four years of coursework and a six-month

internship (generally out-of-town) will have met all requirements to sit for the

board certification exam administered by the Certification Board of Music Ther-

apists in order to become a Board Certified Music Therapist. The primary goal of

the program is to prepare men and women in skills using music to provide ther-

apy for individuals with various disabilities.

Music therapy, as defined by the American Music Therapy Association, is

the scientific application of music, as directed by the music therapist in a thera-

peutic environment, to influence changes in behavior. Such changes can enable

individuals to achieve a more appropriate adjustment to society and to improve

their functioning in a community setting. As a member of the therapeutic or edu-

cational team, the professional music therapist participates in the analysis of in-

dividual problems and in the formulation of treatment or instructional objectives

before planning and carrying out specific musical activities.

Music therapists are trained as both musicians and therapists, and work with

people of all ages who have learning, behavioral, or physical disorders. Some of

the clients served by music therapists include persons with mental, emotional,

physical, or learning disabilities, as well as persons with hearing, speech, or vi-

sual impairments. Throughout the music therapy program, music is used to assist

persons with disabilities in developing appropriate social skills, functional aca-

demic skills, speech and language abilities, motor skills, daily living skills, and

leisure skills. Music therapy applications appropriate to hospital and clinical set-

tings are also studied. These applications include the incorporation of music in

stress-reduction, pain-management, physical rehabilitation, and counseling pro-

grams.

Competencies of the music therapist are acquired through academic study in

music; music education; the biological, behavioral, and social sciences; and spe-

cial education. All students must complete a concentrated, six-month, full-time

clinical internship in an approved setting, under the direction of an MT-BC. A

variety of programs in the Cache County area provide excellent opportunities for

preclinical field work and research experiences.

Interested students should have an extensive background in instrumental or

vocal music. Instrumental students should have had private lessons on at least

one band or orchestra instrument, piano, or guitar. Vocal students should have

had private voice lessons. Study of the piano and some background knowledge of

music fundamentals is recommended for all students. Students must meet the

Music Department entrance requirements for performance in one of the follow-

ing areas of applied music: voice, piano, organ, classical guitar, and standard

band or orchestral instrument.

Career Opportunities

Music therapists are generally employed in public and private schools, hospi-

tals, and treatment centers with special services. Others are employed in nursing

homes, community mental health centers, day care centers, psychiatric hospitals,

alcohol and drug abuse centers, centers for the physically disabled, state correc-

tional systems, research, and preventative therapy settings. In the public school

system, the music therapist may serve as an itinerant special-teacher or serve in a

special day, residential, or hospital school.
