博尔赫斯《奇谭录》中的八则中国故事

博尔赫斯(Jorge Luis Borges)的大名读者当不陌生。他是阿根廷著名作家,后因《歧路园》(又译《小径分叉的花园》)驰誉国际文坛。上世纪八九十年代,国内掀起了博尔赫斯热潮,他诡谲奇幻的风格更深刻影响了余华、格非、苏童等一代先锋作家。博尔赫斯毕生痴迷中国文化,通过翻译阅读了《聊斋志异》、《红楼梦》、《易经》、《论语》等经典。其生前虽有游华之愿,终成憾事。博氏与吾华渊源,早有论著述及。此处只谈其与友人比奥伊·卡萨雷斯(Bioy Casares)夫妇合编的《奇谭录》(The Book of Fantasy,1940)。

《奇谭录》遴选古往今来世界各国的81篇奇幻作品,内有8篇取自中国。《庄子》、《红楼》诸篇不难识别,他篇则鲜人谈及。今荟录于此,略考源流,辅以按语,以飨读者。

第一篇为The Dream of the Butterfly Chuang Tzu,此即庄周梦蝶。该篇沿用汉学家翟里斯(Herbert A. Giles)之英译。翟里斯在《中国文学史》中评价《庄子乃“奇异斐然、首屈一指的传世之作”。篇幅较短,故予全录:

The philosopher Chuang Tzu dreamed he was a butterfly,and when he woke up he said he did not know whether he was Chuang Tzu who had dreamed he was a butterfly,or a butterfly now dreaming that it was Chuang Tzu.

(原文为:昔者庄周梦为蝴蝶,栩栩然蝴蝶也。自喻适志与!不知周也。俄然觉,则蘧蘧然周也。不知周之梦为蝴蝶与?蝴蝶之梦为周与?周与蝴蝶,则必有分矣。此之谓物化。——《庄子·齐物论》)

第二篇为The Story of the Foxes Niu Chiao。乍看Niu Chiao,马上想到了唐人牛峤,之前讲织女与郭翰的《郭翰》即出自他的《灵怪录》。正文作者信息只有Niu Chiao, ninth-century Chinese poet and savant. He wrote more than thirty books。寥寥数语,且非名家,故识者不多。虽出处不详,谅必不出《灵怪录》诸篇。因内有Wang与狐狸二字,粗检一番,遂得《灵怪录·王生》。此篇后录入《太平广记》卷第四百五十三狐七。英译如下:

Wang saw two Foxes standing on their hind legs and leaning against a tree. One of them held a sheet of paper in its hand, and they laughed together as though they were sharing a joke. Wang tried to frighten them off but they stood their ground, and finally he shot at the one holding the page. The Fox was hit in the eye and Wang took away the piece of paper. At the inn Wang told the story to the other guests. While he spoke a gentleman having a bandage eye came in. He listened to Wang’s story with interest and asked if he might not be shown the paper. Wang was just about to produce it when the innkeeper noticed that the newcomer had a tail. “He is a Fox!” he shouted, and on the spot the gentleman turned into a Fox and fled. The Foxes tried time after time to recover the paper, which was filled with indecipherable writing, but repeatedly set back. Wang decided at last to return home. On the road he met his whole family, who were on their way to the capital. They said that he had ordered them to undertake the journey, and his mother showed him the letter in which he asked them to sell off all their property and join him in the city. Wang, studying the letter, saw that the page was blank. Although they no longer had a roof over their heads, he ordered, “Let’s go back.”   

One day a younger brother appeared whom everyone had given up for dead. He asked about the family’s misfortunes and Wang told him the whole story. “Ah,” said the brother when Wang came to the part about the Foxes, “there lies the root of all the evil.” Wang showed him the page in question. Tearing it from Wang’s hand, the brother stuffed the sheet into his pocket and said, “At last I have back what I wanted.” Then, changing himself into a Fox, he made his escape.

杭州有王生者,建中初,辞亲之上国。收拾旧业,将投于亲知,求一官耳。行至圃田,下道,寻访外家旧庄。日晚,柏林中见二野狐倚树如人立,手执一黄纸文书,相对言笑,旁若无人。生乃叱之,不为变动。生乃取弹,因引满弹之,且中其执书者之目,二狐遗书而走。王生遽往,得其书,才一两纸,文字类梵书而莫究识,遂缄于书袋中而去。其夕,宿于前店,因话于主人。方讶其事,忽有一人携装来宿,眼疾之甚,若不可忍,而语言分明,闻王之言曰:“大是异事,如何得见其书?”王生方将出书,主人见患眼者一尾垂下床,因谓生曰:“此狐也。”王生遽收书于怀中,以手摸刀逐之,则化为狐而走。一更后,复有人扣门,王生心动曰:“此度更来,当与刀箭敌汝矣。”其人隔门曰:“尔若不还我文书,后无悔也!”自是更无消息。王生秘其书,缄滕甚密。行至都下,以求官伺谒之事,期方赊缓,即乃典贴旧业田园,卜居近坊,为生生之计。月余,有一僮自杭州而至,可入门,手执凶王生迎而问之,则生已丁。家难已数日,闻之恸哭。生因视其书,则母之手字云:“吾本家秦,不愿葬于外地。今江东田地物业,不可分毫破除,但都下之业,可一切处置,以资丧事。备具皆毕,然后自来迎接。王生乃尽货田宅,不候善价,得其资,备涂刍之礼,无所欠少。既而复篮舁东下,以迎灵舆。及至扬州,遥见一船子,上有数人,皆喜笑歌唱。渐近视之,则皆王生之家人也。意尚谓其家货之,今属他人矣。须臾。又有小弟妹搴帘而出,皆彩服笑语。惊怪之际,则其家人船上惊呼,又曰:“郎君来矣,是何服饰之异也?”王生潜令人问之,乃见其母惊出。生遽毁其衰绖,行拜而前。母迎而问之,其母骇曰:“安得此理?”王生乃出母送遗书,乃一张空纸耳。母又曰:“吾所以来此者,前月得汝书云,近得一官,令吾尽货江东之产,为入京之计。今无可归矣。”及母出王生所寄之书,又一空纸耳。王生遂发使入京,尽毁其凶丧之具。因鸠集余资,自淮却扶侍,且往江东。所有十无一二,才得数间屋,至以庇风雨而已。有弟一人,别且数岁,一旦忽至,见其家道败落,因征其由。王生具话本末,又述妖狐事,曰:“但应以此为祸耳。”其弟惊嗟,因出妖狐之书以示之。其弟才执其书,退而置于怀中,曰:“今日还我天书。”言毕,乃化作一狐而去。

(按:上古尚有大禹娶涂山狐女之说,魏晋以降,狐由仙入妖,又兼变化魅人之法,渐遗恶名。)

第三篇为The Tiger of Chao-Ch' Eng P'u Sung Ling,即蒲松龄《聊斋志异·赵城虎》。作者信息有in 1651 he was a graduate of ten years' standing等语,实为误记。留仙生于崇祯十三年(1640年),19岁应童子试,后屡试不第,至71岁方成岁贡生。此处11岁不知何指,或言十年寒窗之功,或云留仙仕途蹭蹬。此篇选自翟里斯名译Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, or Lao Tse(当为误记, Liao Tse)。因篇幅较长,不予收录,简而述之,一虎误食赵城老妇之子,为赎前罪,时衔金帛济之,后妇死虎哀,乡人立义虎祠之事。

第四篇为The Encounter  from the T'ang Dynasty。此篇并无出处,然一见Chienniang,即知必为《离魂记》之倩娘。早年读林语堂《吾国与吾民》,乃知倩娘之事。此篇英译亦出自翟里斯之手。《离魂记》说的是张倩娘与表兄王宙自幼订亲,因倩父悔婚,倩娘夤夜追王,与王相伴五载。后倩娘思念双亲,携夫归家,方才知晓出奔的乃倩娘之离魂。二娘相会,“其衣裳皆重”,合为一体。后世颇多敷衍此事之作,如元郑光祖《述青琐倩女离魂》杂剧,明汤临川《牡丹亭》之《离魂》、《魂游》、《幽媾》等折亦本于此。又按,古之女子多取娘字,如倩娘、真娘、贞娘、公孙大娘、赵五娘、丽娘,盖指年轻女子,今则多指妇女老妪,苏州土语之小娘儿尚存古意。

第五篇、第六篇为The Infinite Dream of Pao-Yu和 The Mirror to Wind-and-Moon,作者为Tsao Hsueh-Chin。作者信息提到译自The Dream of the Red Chamber当为王际真译本,盖彼时霍克思、杨宪益二译本尚未问世,又提到《红楼梦》与《金瓶梅》(Kin Ping Mei)等写实主义小说一样,内多离奇怪诞之事。前为《红楼梦》五十六回贾宝玉梦甄宝玉事,后为第五回《 贾天祥正照风月鉴》。《红楼梦》本为假语村言,亦真亦幻,故贾甄二人,实为一体二面,此颇合弗洛伊德潜意识之说,又似西方文艺批评中之double(重像、分身、替身)。贾瑞照风月宝鉴,宝鉴开口,盖唐传奇《古镜记》早有此例,有心者可两相参之。按,博尔赫斯对《红楼》多激赏之语,初识于翟氏之汉籍英译,《博尔赫斯谈艺录》中收有《曹雪芹红楼梦》一文,言《红》“我们好像在幢幢院宇中迷了路……游太虚一节实在魔幻,全书充斥了绝望的情欲,主题是人的堕落与皈依救赎”。又按,博尔赫斯早已注意到《红》中的梦幻、镜子、真假,《歧路园》中的雨村博士(Yu Tsun)即取自《红楼梦》中的“贾雨村”(流传最广的 Franz Kuhn 的德译本作“Yü Tsun”,英译本通常作“Yu Tsun”)。国内有多种汉译法,如王央乐译《博 尔赫斯短篇小说集》 (上海译文出版社,1983 年)译作“俞琛” ,王永年译《巴比伦彩票》 (云南出版社, 1993 年)译作“余准” 。

第七篇为The Sorcerer of the White Lotus Lodge,未明出处,只言Richard Wilhelm(德国汉学家卫礼贤)。此文实为《聊斋志异·白莲教》,略言“假兵马死真将军”之白莲妖术。1921年,纽约的弗雷德里克·阿·斯托克斯公司(Frederick A. Stokes Company)出版了卫礼贤( Richard Wilhelm)德译、美国人马顿斯(Frederick Herman Martens,1874—1932)英译的《中国神话故事集》(The Chinese Fairy Book),内收百余则中国民间故事,包括《种梨》(The Miserly Farmer)、《蛰龙》(The Dragon After His Winter Sleep)、《夜叉国》(The Kingdom of the Ogres)、《白莲教》(The Sorcerer of the White Lotus Lodge)、《娇娜》(Giauna The Beautiful)等多篇聊斋故事。

第八篇为The Sentence Wu Ch'eng En,为《西游记》第九回 《老龙王拙计犯天条》之英译,说的是泾河龙王私改降雨时辰,后被魏征梦中斩首之事。此回斩龙 、入冥 、游地府、刘全进瓜诸事杂糅,多缀补之迹,李天飞已有详论,不再赘述。
