Amy was looking for a gift for her little daughter. She stopped in front of a store full of dolls.
“Girls like dolls,” she thought as she stepped into the store.
Looking around, she saw a grandma doll — one with grey hair and a pair of glasses. In her mind appeared Joyce, her own mother.
When Amy was a little girl, she got her first doll from Joyce for her birthday. Then the second, the third... the dolls never arrived late, year after year.
“Why always a doll?” This question had been in Amy’s mind until one day her father gave the answer. Joyce dreamed of having a doll when she was a child herself. Her parents promised one for her fifth birthday. Sadly, they both died in a traffic accident before it arrived. The never—received gift was the most precious one in her eyes.
Recalling(回想起) her mother’s story, Amy got an idea.
It was Joyce’s 70th birthday. She got a package with a card that read:
Dear Joyce,
I forget to send you a package that you should have received on May 20, 1955, your fifth birthday. The gift inside has aged, but I felt that you might still want to have it.
Love,
Angel of Joy

On the first day of the New Year 2018,I made up my mind to go to Thailand to teach English as a volunteer. At the bginning, all I cared about was travelling and seeing the world. I didn’t know how fantastic my life would be in the coming months!
My journey began with attending TESOL certification(认证) course in my home state of Florida last February. After 3 weekends of study and another 40 hours’ study online, I received my TESOL certificate.
I was asked to contact Philip, who is Program Director of the Teach in Thailand. After discussing with Philip, I chose my school and after many months of excitement,I finally flew to Thailand in early April and I couldn’t wait to explore the country!

Most people think the older you get, the harder it is to learn a new language. They believe that at some point in our life, maybe around 12 or 13, we lose the ability to learn a new language well. (51)
There is a common idea that children learn a foreign language better than adults. (52) There was a research on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish. The researchers found that the teenagers learned more, in less time, than the younger children. In another research on a group of Americans who learned Russian, the researchers came to a similar conclusion. They found the learner’s ability to learn increased as the age increased, from childhood to adulthood.
Why? (53) For one thing, adults know more about the world. As a result, they are able to understand meanings more easily than children. What’s more, adults can use logical(逻辑的) thinking to help themselves remember the rules of the language.
So, are children better language learners than adults? (55) Remember the common idea may not be a fact.

七、阅读表达 (共5小题,计10分)
阅读短文,根据要求完成下面各小题。
Why do you feel encouraged when your teacher gives you a smile? How do you know your mother is angry when she frowns(皱眉)? In both cases, 83 the person is telling us something not with words, but with facial expressions.
Facial expressions are one or more movements on a person’s face, such as frowning, raising one s eyebrows, and nose and lip movements. They express people’s feelings.
Scientists at Oxford University have shown that humans have 80 muscles on their faces. These muscles can create more than 7,000 facial expressions. However, there are six main kinds of facial expressions that are common in all cultures: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear and anger. Facial expressions are very important to communication. One study at UCLA, in the US, showed that in most conversations, over 93 percent of the communicating is done without speaking.
If people can read facial expressions, they may be better at knowing what other people are feeling, so they can understand them better. Someone who does not enjoy a certain type of food usually will make a face when they see or taste it. A frown means worry or anger. Raised eyebrows and open eyes show surprise.
However, there are some taboos(禁忌) for reading people’s facial expressions. For example, 84 it is not a good idea to stare at someone for a long time while you are reading his or her facial expressions. They may think you are rude.
