四 ． 文本精讲
下面我们来逐句看一下今天的这首诗：
这首诗一共 3 节，每节 8 行，每一节都是通过不同语境的阐述，来表达乐观和悲观会对一个人造成的影
响。同时，每节诗的韵律都是 abcbdefe。我们先来看第一节：
Laugh, and the world laughs with you;（你）欢笑，世界随你欢笑；
Weep, and you weep alone;（你）哭泣，唯你独自哭泣；
然后是一个 For 引导的原因状语从句：
For the sad old earth 因为这个忧伤 又古老的地球
must borrow its mirth, 必须去借来它的欢乐
But has trouble 但是（它）却有麻烦
什么样的麻烦呢？然后是一个形容词短语作后置定语：
enough of its own. 自己足够的（麻烦）。
这四行诗这么直译起来很蹩脚，其实用正常汉语的逻辑来理解就非常简单：
你笑，世界会陪着你笑；
你哭，就只能自己去哭了；
因为这个地球上的快乐（本就不多，甚至还）需要去借，
但是麻烦却不少。

换句话说：这个 世界处处都是不 开心的事情，大家本身就疲于去应对。如果你 自己开心一点，可能还会
给大家带来一丝欢乐。但是如果你不开心，大家也就自然不愿意向你靠近。
Sing, and the hills will answer;（ 你 ）欢唱，群山会回应；
Sigh, it is lost on the air;（你）叹息，叹息会随风消失；
on the air 指的是 “ 在空气中传播 ” ，平时我们在看电视的时候如果电视上有 on air 或者 live 这样的标
识，就是 “ 直播 ” 的意思。
另外， in the air 指的是 “ 在空中 ” ，可以 表示 “ 在天上飞 ” 。
同时，英语里有个短语叫做 up in the air，意思是 “ 悬在空中的、悬而未定的 ” 。这几个短语大家可以
一并记住。
The echoes bound to a joyful sound, 回声跳着跑向快乐的声音，
我们之前学过， bound 作形容词，可以表示 “ 捆绑的、受束缚的 ” ，和 bind（捆绑）相关。不过这里的
bound 是作动词，表示 “ 跳跃着跑 ” ，是一个拟声词。比如说： The kids bounded ahead.（孩子们在
前面蹦蹦跳跳地跑着。）
But shrink from voicing care. 但却会从吐露出来的忧虑当中 退缩。
voicing 来自 voice（名词 “ 嗓音 ” ，动词 “ 表达、吐露 ” ）， voicing 指的是 “ 吐露的、表达出来
的 ” ；
care 作名词，除了可以表示 “ 关心 ” ，也可以表示 “ 忧虑 ” 。
这里的 voicing care，指的是 “ 吐露出来的忧虑 ” ，对应前面的 sigh（叹息）；
voicing care 相对的是 joyful sound（快乐的声音），对应前面的 sing（唱歌）。
我们再把这四行诗完整看一遍：
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air;
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

你欢唱，群山快乐回应；

连连回声跳着跑向快乐，
但却会在忧虑面前退缩。
这四行诗，通过一种拟人的手法，通过群山和回声对待欢唱和叹息截然不同的态度，再次表达了人们追
求乐观、排斥悲观的现象。
我们继续来看这首诗的第二节：
Rejoice, and men will seek you;（ 你 ）喜悦，人们会追寻你；
Grieve, and they turn and go;（ 你 ）伤悲，人们转身而去；
They want full measure of all your pleasure, 他们想要你全部的快乐，
full measure of，表示 “ 全部的、完全的 ” 。
But they do not need your woe. 但是他们不需要你的悲伤。
Be glad, and your friends are many;（ 你 ）高兴，你的 朋友 就很多；
Be sad, and you lose them all;（你）伤悲 ，你就失去了全部 朋友；
There are none to decline your nectared wine, 没有人会拒绝你甘甜的美酒，
decline 作动词，除了有 “ 下降、减少、衰退 ” 之意，还可以表示 “ 谢绝、婉言拒绝 ” 。另外我们之前学
过 nectar（名词 “ 花蜜 、甘露 ” ），这里的 nectared 作形容词，意思是 “ 甘甜的 ” 。
But alone you must drink life’s gall. 但是你必须独自喝掉人生的苦涩。
这里之所以 把 alone 提前，就是为了突出 “ 独自 ” 。
我们接着来 看这首诗的第三节：
Feast, and your halls are crowded; 宴请款待，你的大厅就会挤满人；
Fast, and the world goes by; 你禁食，这个世界就会与你擦肩而过；

这里有两个词，一个叫做 feast（宴请），一个叫做 fast（禁食、斋戒），放在语境里正好是一对反义
词，而且头尾都很押韵。
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,（你）成功并且给予（别人），这会 帮助你生活，
But no man can help you die. 但是没人能帮你死亡。
也就是说：获得成功并且给予身边的人，你的生活会过得很好；但是当你要死的时候，只能自己独自去
面对。虽然听起来有些凄凉，但事实也确实如此。
There is room in the halls of pleasure 在快乐的大厅里有地方
对于什么来说呢？
For a long and lordly train, 对于一辆又长又豪华的列车，
lordly 这个词来自 lord（主人），在英国指的是 “ 贵族 ” ，所以 lordly 作形容词表示 “ 贵族气派的、豪
华的 ” 。
也 就是说：对于生命这趟又长又豪华的列车来说，快乐的大厅里总能容得下别人。
But one by one 但是一个接一个
we must all file on 我们必须列队前行
列队前行去哪里呢？
Through the narrow aisles of pain. 穿过狭窄的痛苦的过道。
最后四行诗，既写实又饱含深意。
从现实生活的角度去看，对于买票登上豪华列车的人，你总能找到属于自己温暖的座位。但是不管你的
座位多豪华、多奢侈，也没人能替你排 队往前走，每个人都得列队慢慢穿过狭窄的列车过道，才能到 达
属于自己的地方。
从这首诗整体传递的思想来看，一个人虽然最终可能是快乐的，但是在追求快乐的道路上遇到的各种艰
难险阻，只能个人自己去承担。

如果说这首诗的前半部分主要向我们传递的是要保持乐观积极、摒弃悲观厌世，那么最后四行诗就是在
告诉我们，在生命的旅途中，一个人只有能够独自面对逆境，才能最终达到快乐的彼岸。最后四行诗，
也让这首诗的主题得到了很好的升华。
人生磨难和快乐总是相随相伴，只要保持一颗快乐的心，便是拥有了整个世界。读诗，是一种感悟，不
同的人 生阅历，读诗的心情和体会也都有不同。但好的诗篇，总能发 人深省、动人心弦，而 Solitude（
《孤独》） 正是这样一首难得的佳作。

五 ． 亮解单词
下面我们一起来看一下这首诗里的核心词汇：
1. weep [wi?p] vt.&vi. 哭泣
weep 作动词表示 “ 哭泣 ” ，是个书面语，和 cry 相比，更加侧重 “ 低声哭 ” 或者 “ 流泪 ” 。比如说：
She wept for joy when she heard that her husband was still alive.（当听到自己的丈夫还活着的时
候，她喜极而泣。）这里用到的就是 weep 的过去式 wept。这句话我们也可以说成： She wept tears
of joy when she heard that her husband was still alive.
2. mirth [m?θ] n. 欢笑；欢乐
这个词前面的 mir 和 merry（愉快的）相关；后面是一个名词后缀 -th。 mirth 作名词表示 “ 欢笑、欢

4. echo [‘ek ??] n. 回声 vi. 发出回声 vt. 重复，附和
echo 是希腊神话当中山林里的仙女（ 艾柯 ），因为得罪了宙斯的妻子赫拉而遭受惩罚，丧失了正常说话
的能力，只能重复别人说过的最后一个字，所以 echo 就有了 “ 回声 ” 的意思。
echo 可以作名词，比如说： He heard nothing but the echoes of his own voice in the cave.（他在
山洞里 除了自己 的回声， 什么 也 没听见。 ）
echo 也可以作动词，表示 “ 发出回声、回响 ” 。比如说： Her footsteps echoed in the empty room.
