Part1四级句子精读

• The sheets are damp with sweat.

sheet这个单词可以说是非常熟悉了，在Excel里面经常见到，指的是“工作表”。当然，在这里并非该意思，而是指 “床单，被单”。比如说 The sheets are 100% pure cotton. 这些被单是100%的纯棉。此外，sheet还可以作量词，表示“张”，“块”，“层”等。如a sheet of newspaper 一张报纸。a sheet of ice.一大层冰

damp指的是slightly wet, often in a way that is unpleasant 潮湿的；微湿的；湿气重的。这里的be damp with sweat就是指被汗浸湿。

The sheets are soaked with sweat.

The sheets are drenched in sweat.

上面的两个是同义表达，其中soak为动词，一般用作 ~ (sth) (in sth)表示浸泡；浸湿；浸透；湿透。drench也有这个用法

• Given how unsettling and haunting nightmares can be, is there a way for dreamers to avoid, even turn off , these bad dreams as they happen?鉴于恶梦可能会令人不安和困扰，有什么方法可以让做梦者避免，甚至在这些恶梦发生时就将其中止？

unsettling指的是令人不安（或紧张、担忧）的，而haunting指绕心头的；使人难忘的。这里巧妙地运用了对偶的形式，在写作中运用起来会是加分项。注意这里的turn off是指“中断，打断”的意思。

Part2经常误用的词和词组

1aggravate  &   irritate

第一个词的意思是：使一个早就令人麻烦或恼火的事情或状 态“加剧”(to add to)。第二个词则表示：”使烦恼” (to vex)或“使生气” (to anaoy）或“使急躁” (to chafe)。

2Alternate & Alternative

这两个词作名词或形容调用时并非总是可以互换的。第一个词意指在连续的一组中每隔一个，即“轮流交替的”，第二个则指：两种可能性中的一种，即“两者挑一的”。作为 两个一组中的另一个，alternate可表示“替代的人或物”。alternaive虽然用于类似的意义，但总是包含着一种选择，这层意思 alternative 是不具备的。如：

As the flooded road left them no alternative, they took the alternate route.(由于道路被水淹没，他们别无选择，只好走另一条路线。）

3Among &Betweens

涉及两个以上的事或人时，通常需要用among。例如,The money was divided among the four players. (四位演员共分这笔钱.)可是，涉及两个以上的事或人，且一一加以考感时，使用between更为合适。例如：“an agreement between the six heirs.”（六个继承人之闻的协议。）
