The term “Iron Man” has many connotations(内涵), including references to a song, a comic book icon, even a movie. Yet only one definition of the term truly lives up to its name: the Ironman triathlon held annually in Hawaii, a picturesque( 独 特 的 )setting for a challenging race, which demands amazing physical prowess and the ability to swim, bike, and run a marathon, all in less than 12 hours with no break. Very few individuals are up to the task.

However, Gordon Haller is a notable exception. Growing up in the 1950s, Haller developed an interest in many sports categorized as endurance( 耐 性 )athletics and welcomed their physical demands. As he pursued a degree in physics he drove a taxi to pay the bills, but competitive training proved his passion. So when he heard about the race in 1978, the first year it was held, he immediately signed up.

The race originated in a somewhat amusing way. The members of the two popular

sports clubs, the Mid-Pacific Road Runners of Honolulu and the Waikiki Swim Club of Oahu, had a long-standing and good-natured debate going over who made better athletes: runners or swimmers. However, some local bikes thought both clubs were wrong, claiming that they, in fact, deserved the title. Wanting to settle the dispute ( 争论)once and for all, they decided to combine three separate races already held annually on the island into one massive test of endurance. Thus, the Waikiki Rough water Swim of 2.4 miles, the Around-Oahu Bike race of 112 miles, and the Honolulu Marathon of 26.2 miles were all put together to form the Ironman Triathlon.

Haller was one of only fifteen competitors to show up that February morning to start the race. He quickly scanned the few pages of rules and instructions, and on the last page he discovered a sentence that would become the race’s famous slogan: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag( 吹 牛 )for the rest of your life!” Haller took that to

heart, and at the end of the day, he became the first Ironman champion in history. Haller’s

physical strength enabled him to do what no one else in the past had accomplished.

In the approximately thirty years since that very first race, the Ironman has become a tradition in Hawaii and now boasts approximately 1500 entrants every year. The competitors who complete the race don’t have to be the first across the finish line to claim success: just finishing is a victory onto itself.

The “Iron Man” in the passage above refers to .

A. a folk song B. a movie character

C. a triathlon athlete D. a sports event

What does the underlined word “prowess” in the first paragraph mean?

A. muscles B. skills C. balance D. reaction

The Ironman race was born due to the fact that .

the two clubs fought over who made better athletes

gordon Haller wanted to show his great endurance

the combined race can help choose the most athletic

club members wanted to improve their physical abilities

What can we infer from the passage about the first Ironman Triathlon?

Participants had to choose two from the three races in the first Ironman Triathlon.

Haller may not have known the rules of it before he showed up for the event.

No other competitors other than Haller finished the races in the end.

Sixteen competitors in total participated in it on February morning.

What does the last paragraph try to tell us?

It is the participation rather than victory that counts.

The current Ironman Triathlon is different from the original one.

The victors respond excitedly when crossing the finish line.

The event attracts many people because it creates good fortune.

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.” “Two full inches in the first three days!”

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters.

The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor,

which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.

Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律诉讼),and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.

It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are .

A. objective B. costly C. unreliable D. illegal

Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.

New products are more likely to be questionable.

The production of a device must be approved by FDA.

The promoters usually just care about profits.

FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product .

A. if it is a drug B. if it is a device

C if its consumers make complaints D. if its distributors challenge FDA’s authority

The Relaxacisor is mentioned as .

a product which was designed to produce electricity

a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case

a successful advertisement of a beauty product

an example of a quality beauty product

The author intends to .

make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises

show the weakness of the law on product safety

give advice on how to keep young and beautiful

introduce the organization of FDA

Robotic surgery is one thing, but sending a robot inside the body to carry out an operation quite another, which has long been a goal of some researchers to produce tiny robotic devices being capable of traveling through the body to deliver drugs or to make repairs without the need for a single cut, the possibility of which has just got a bit closer.

However, unlike the plot of one film——which featured a microscopic crew and submarine traveling through a scientist’s bloodstream——this device could not be inserted into blood vessels( 管 )because it is too big. While other types of miniature swallowable robots have been developed in the past, their role has mostly been limited to capturing images inside the body. In a presentation this week to the International Conference, Daniela Rus and Shuhei Miyashita of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology described

a robot they have developed that can be swallowed and used to collect dangerous objects accidentally taken in.

To test their latest version, Dr Rus and Dr Miyashita designed a robot as a battery hunter, which might seem to be an odd task, but more than 3,500 people in America alone, most of them children, swallow the tiny button cells used in small electronic devices by accident every year. To start with, the researchers created an artificial esophagus(食道)

and stomach made out of silicone(硅胶). It was closely modeled on that found in a pig and

filled with medical liquid; the robot itself is made from several layers of different materials,

including pig intestine(肠),and contains a little magnet. This is folded up and encased in a 10mmx27mm capsule of ice. Once this reaches the stomach the ice melts and the robot unfolds which is moved and guided with the use of a magnetic field outside the body. In their tests, the robot was able to touch a button battery and draw it with its own magnet, and during dragging it along, the robot could then be directed towards the intestines where it would eventually be gotten rid of through the anus(肛门). After it,the researchers sent in another robot loaded with medication to deliver it to the site of the battery burn to speed up healing.

The artificial stomach being transparent on one side, the researchers were able to see the batteries and visually control the robots. If not, that will require the help from imaging system, which will be a bit more of a challenge, but Dr.Rus and Dr.Miyashita are determined to succeed.

The robot described by Dr.Rus and Dr. Miyashita is a breakthrough in that .

they can capture images inside the body

they can travel through the body to make repairs without a single cut

they can be swallowed and collect dangerous objects accidentally taken in

they can be inserted into blood vessels

According to Para.3, which statement about the experiment is NOT true?

It’s an odd task to design the robot as a battery hunter.

The experiment use artificial esophagus and stomach.

The actual size of the robot may be larger than the capsule of ice.

After the battery is removed, another robot will be needed to speed up heeling.

What benefits may the experiment bring to medical world?

Few children will swallow the button cells.

Patients will suffer less for some surgeries.

Patients will no longer go through any operation.

The surgeries will cost patients much money.

How do Dr.Rus and Dr.Miyashita see the prospect of their robot?

A. It’s challenging but promising. B. It’s challenging but successful.

C. It’s certain and successful. D. It’s uncertain and hopeless.

Which can be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. The Robotic Voyage in Body B. An Exploration of Robot

C. The Robotic Operation D. An Experiment on Robot

第二节:阅读表达(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。

Personal growth doesn’t necessarily only happen when the conditions are perfect. Seeds tend to develop only when conditions are right. A seed will remain dormant (休眠) until moisture (湿度) and temperature are favorable for growth. Unfortunately, as humans, we don’t always have the luxury of growing when conditions are just right. Sometimes you

must cultivate personal growth and flower where you’re planted, often in spite of external circumstances.

For much of my life, I let external circumstances control my happiness. If things weren’t going well, then I wasn’t well. I told myself that I would be happier if conditions were right. With this mindset, I gave myself permission to stay emotionally dormant. I was waiting for things around me to change before I would do the work to become a better version of myself. In other words, I made my personal growth conditional on external circumstances.

The problem with waiting for change outside of yourself is that you might have to wait a very long time, maybe even forever. And if you stay dormant while waiting, you aren’t growing. You’re simply stuck in place. You certainly aren’t becoming the better version of yourself that you want to be.

If you want to engage in personal growth, like planting seeds, you have to do some work to make it happen. You can’t wait around for everything to fall into place. Start with pulling up your emotional weeds. Examine yourself and remove the pessimistic thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back. Then, work on the foundation that you have. Practice positive life habits that build your self-respect and happiness.

Personal growth is something you can fight for. It may not come naturally, but when you develop this mindset, you will flower no matter where you’re planted.

What does the underlined word “cultivate” in paragraph 1 probably mean? (1 word)

What affected the author’s growth most in the past? (no more than 3 words)

What does the author suggest you do if you want to engage in personal growth? (no more than 10 words)
