China's domestic expressway network is a remarkable achievement, reaching an astonishing 177,000 kilometers in 2022. This impressive mileage places the country's expressway system among the world's largest. However, like any vast and complex system, expressways also have their own issues and controversies. While drivers enjoy the convenience brought by expressways, they have raised questions and criticisms about certain existing regulations.

Firstly, regarding the issue of expressway tolls, some vehicle owners believe that the fees are too high. However, most people take a more rational view of this matter. After all, the construction and maintenance of expressways require massive financial support. From this perspective, the collection of tolls is largely reasonable and justifiable. Of course, we cannot ignore the voices of those who consider the fees to be excessive, but considering the overall functioning of the system, this tolling model still receives widespread acceptance among the majority of vehicle owners.

Furthermore, the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has been widely promoted in recent years within China. Some vehicle owners complain that due to the widespread adoption of ETC, manual toll booths have gradually decreased, causing inconvenience to those who do not use ETC. However, from another perspective, the expansion of the ETC system has actually improved the efficiency of expressway travel. According to 2022 statistics, the nationwide ETC user count reached 285 million, while the total national vehicle count stood at 319 million. This means that only about 10% of vehicle owners have not yet adopted the ETC system.

However, not all expressway regulations are widely accepted. The first issue concerns reports that Shandong expressways are considering reforming their so-called 'cliff-like' speed limit regulations. These abrupt speed changes often catch drivers off guard, with speeds shifting from 120 kilometers per hour one moment to requiring a sudden reduction to 80 kilometers per hour the next. This not only increases the difficulty of driving but also potentially raises the risk of traffic accidents.

This potential reform has garnered widespread support from vehicle owners. Many believe that these 'cliff-like' speed limit regulations should have been abolished or reformed long ago. After all, driving at relatively high speeds on expressways requires drivers to react quickly upon seeing speed limit signs. The existing 'cliff-like' speed limit regulations clearly add to the challenge of meeting this requirement.

Another issue worth noting concerns road signs on expressways. There have been recent rumors that future road signs will only feature Chinese characters, with the removal of English and other foreign language markings. On this matter, the response from vehicle owners has also been positive. In a country where Chinese characters and pinyin serve as the primary languages, foreign language markings indeed appear somewhat redundant. They not only occupy limited space but may also divert drivers' attention.

Why is this being said? Because on expressways, the speed of vehicles is consistently high, and drivers need to quickly acquire and process various information. If there is too much or overly complex text on road signs, it can potentially hinder driver judgment and increase the risk of traffic accidents. Therefore, simplifying road signs and retaining only the most essential information is crucial for improving road safety.

In summary, China's expressway system is undoubtedly a monumental undertaking that has made distances shorter and information flow more convenient. However, no system is perfect, and there are always areas that can be improved. For example, Shandong's 'cliff-like' speed limit regulations and multilingual road signs are regulations that most vehicle owners believe should be improved or removed.
