Preserving the Essence of Jinling East Road's Arcade

Recently, I came across a photo shared by a friend showcasing an arcade on Jinling East Road that had been stripped down to its bare bones. Intrigued by this transformation, I decided to take a stroll down memory lane. It had been a while since I last visited, and the changes were striking. Land that had found its rightful owners was bustling with construction activity, while those areas still in limbo were shrouded in wraps, presenting an eerie sight.

I recall writing an article during the refurbishment of the Central Market, where only the facade was preserved, titled "#Shanghai through the Eyes of the Elderly: The Central Market After a Facelift." Back then, I foresaw this trend spreading, as similar construction work was underway on the north side of Gansu Road along the Suzhou River. True to my prediction, a similar scene unfolded on Jinling East Road.

The arcades of Jinling East Road hold significance beyond mere rooftops; they are integral parts of the street-facing structures. While the original buildings might not have been flawless or compliant with modern building regulations or fire safety standards, they were undeniably essential components of the arcade's original form.

Now, as these arcades are stripped down to their bare bones, how do they differ from the so-called "reconstructed" old buildings post-demolition?

It is foreseeable that this approach, seen near Zhejiang South Road, will extend to other sections of Jinling East Road, ultimately transforming the once iconic arcades beyond recognition.

Of particular note is the former headquarters of the "New Youth" magazine on the Fujian South Road side of Jinling East Road. The building, located at 279 Jinling East Road, served as the magazine's central distribution hub. It was here, on August 15, 1920, that the inaugural issue of the "Labor World" weekly was published, bearing the label: "General Sales Office, New Youth Society, across from the Grand Clock of the Shanghai French Concession." Many scholars in the field of history consider this the first public appearance of the name "New Youth Society."

Today, the revamped editorial office of the "New Youth" magazine on 100 Nanchang Road stands as a testament to preservation. Why then has the former distribution center on Jinling East Road in Huangpu District not received similar attention?

In our urban redevelopment endeavors, we have witnessed the demolition of numerous historically significant structures. It is truly regrettable that such events continue to occur, especially at a time when many are awakening to the importance of preserving our architectural heritage.
