Contemplating Tranquility at Jing Si Garden

Following the conclusion of our visit to Tongli, we set off towards Zhenze, aware of its diminutive size. En route, a detour to Jing Si Garden was arranged, a place I had visited with friends several years ago. This private Jiangnan-style garden, constructed over a decade ago, continues to captivate with its historical allure.

Reflecting on the penchant of affluent individuals in early Jiangnan for creating such estates, one can discern that as wealth reached a certain level, the inclination to cultivate personal gardens emerged. Even in bustling metropolises like Shanghai, remnants of this trend persist in the form of historical gardens such as Yuyuan, Yuyuan, Rishou Garden, and others. While many of these gardens have vanished, the fondness for such creations endures in the annals of history.

In the present day, the challenges of constructing a private garden for a wealthy merchant, given the requisite affluence, far surpass those of a century ago. The bureaucratic hurdles involved in obtaining approvals can be quite arduous. Thus, despite being a man-made attraction, it is still worth a visit, particularly for the opportunity to view this private garden from an aerial perspective.

Having stayed overnight in Tongli, we arrived at Jing Si Garden early in the morning, encountering only a handful of tourists before finding ourselves alone, allowing us to quietly appreciate the beauty of this garden.

According to information sourced from Baidu:

Located 3 kilometers west of Tongli Ancient Town in Suzhou, Jing Si Garden is a private garden belonging to entrepreneur Mr. Chen Jingen. Spanning over 100 acres, it was initiated in 1993 and took 10 years to complete. The name "Jing Si" conveys the essence of tranquility and contemplation. The architectural style of the garden follows the classical traditions of Suzhou gardens, combining the quaint charm of Suzhou gardens with the grandeur of imperial gardens. Notable features include the Crane Pavilion Bridge, the Small Rainbow Bridge, the Jing Yuan Hall, the Tianxiang Study, the Pangshan Thatched Cottage, the Su Gate Brick Carvings and Bonsai Garden, the Gallery of Famous Scientists through the Ages, and the Stone Poetry Corridor. The garden showcases a plethora of Lingbi stones, with the "Qingyun Peak" standing over nine meters tall and weighing 136 tons, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest Lingbi stone.

Jing Si Garden boasts the largest collection of Lingbi stones, with hundreds on display in the Wushi Mountain House alone. These "Lingbi stones," formed from volcanic magma cooling over 500 million years ago, are renowned in China for their hardness, luster, and varied colors, including purple, black, and grey. Sculpted into shapes resembling turtles, tigers, flying horses, leaping lions, welcoming pine trees, Purple Cloud Peak, and characters from folklore, each piece stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring craftsmanship of nature.
