1. I.      形式和发音

Reading：

Wei Fang and Fang Qin were in England. They wanted to go to the USA. They were searching for the information everywhere. Then they noticed the advertisement in the newspaper.

“Going to the USA? Go with the airline that really looks after you, the one that gives you real value for money. The honest airline. Fly British Air !” The price was so low and they booked the tickets the same day.

1．定冠词只有一种形式the，用于单数或复数名词前。

the tickets   the same day

2．在辅音读音开头的词前读：

the newspaper   the price      the one    the tickets

3．在元音读音开头的词前读：

the advertisement   the easy way    the honest airline

II．基本用法：

Reading：：

Wei Fang and Fang Qin phoned for a taxi. The taxi was late. On the way to the airport there was a traffic jam on the motorway. Because of the traffic jam they arrived at the airport late, at half past twelve. The flight left at quarter past one.

1．谈到特指的人或事要用定冠词，试比较：

Wei Fang and Fang Qin phoned for a taxi.（任何一辆出租车，并不特指哪一辆）

The taxi was late.（他们打电话要的那一辆）

The flight left at quarter past one.（他们买票要上的飞机）

2．当一个名词第一次被提到时，用不定冠词a/an.。重复提到时用定冠词。

Wei Fang and Fang Qin phoned for a taxi. The taxi was late.

There was a traffic jam on the motorway. Because of the traffic jam they arrived at the airport late.

III. 不用定冠词的情况

Reading：

On the plane they had lunch and dinner. When they arrived in New York they just wanted to go to bed. They went by bus to the center of town. It was Saturday, so the streets of Manhattan weren’t too crowded. Most New Yorkers don’t go to work on Saturdays; they stay at home in the suburbs. Their hotel was on 22^nd Street. They took a taxi. The taxi driver was Puerto Rican and he spoke mainly Spanish. They didn’t learn Spanish at school.

在下列情况下不用定冠词：

1．在诸如in bed/to bed, at work/to work, at home等短语中：

They wanted to go to bed. They don’t go to work.

They stay at home.

2．在谈到节日、星期几的短语中：

It was Saturday,  They don’t go to work on Saturdays.

in Juneat Christmas   before Christmas

3．在表示一日三餐饭时：They had lunch and dinner.

4．在学校课程前：They didn’t learn Spanish at school.

5．在诸如下列表示时间的短语中：last week ，  next month ， next Monday

6．在诸如by bus, by train等的短语中（可以看成用具体名词的抽象用法，表示方法或手段）：  They went by bus.

7．表示一个独一无二的身份、职位时：In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States

8．可数名词用复数名词表类时：Lions like living in groups.(但如果用单数表示类别，则需用定冠词或不定冠词，如：The lion likes living in groups. A lion likes living in groups.)
