The Quiet Evolution of Baoshan Road Area

Recently, a friend reminded me that certain blocks near Baoshan Road still retain their historical charm, prompting me to revisit a place I had long neglected. In 2017, I penned an article about Baoshan Lane on Baoshan Road, a year during which I meandered through this vicinity multiple times, capturing the essence of the impending relocation of Baoshan Road, Baochang Road, Baoyuan Road, and Baotong Road.

Within the confines of these four "Bao"-prefixed areas lies a cluster of ancient stone gate buildings dating back to 1920. Baoshan Road was once a hub of factories, attracting workers and the impoverished masses, making it a focal point for early revolutionary activities among laborers. As early as the initial stages of the May Thirtieth Movement in 1925, preparations for the Shanghai General Union had commenced at No. 2, Lane 403 of Baoshan Road.

Simultaneously, situated in the former International Settlement, this area bore witness to the ravages of the Sino-Japanese War during the 1932 January 28th Incident. Japanese forces bombarded this region, gradually extending their control over the area.

The photography and explorations in 2017 truly enlightened me about the actual state of this region. Interestingly, during the period following the Reform and Opening Up policy, the vicinity of Baoshan Road, Baochang Road, and Baotong Road was dotted with small metal processing workshops. In the eyes of the common folk, metalworking involving lathes, pliers, hammers, and milling machines was typically reserved for factories. However, here one could witness an array of metalworking machinery, providing a space for individuals with adept hands and a penchant for crafting personalized devices. In the earlier days, the people of Shanghai had yet to reach a stage where they could have personal workshops in their own garages. When their ingenuity and restless hands sought a realm for expression, these workshops sufficed.

Returning to the area in recent days, it is evident that it has been deserted, with some blocks undergoing extensive construction. Towering high-rises now dominate the landscape, leaving behind only a few old stone gate residences. It remains unclear whether these remnants are preserved due to the historical significance of the former site of the Shanghai General Union and residences of notable figures.

Originally situated near the old North Shanghai Railway Station, historically one of Shanghai's earliest railway lines, the area was bustling and vibrant. However, as the old station fell into disuse, the place gradually faded from memory. In terms of residential development, it initially began around Zhongxing Road and Yongxing Road, while the vicinity of Baoyuan Road currently lacks appeal due to its proximity to the light rail.

Even the renowned Qiujiang Road Second-hand Market has exited the historical stage, and the infamous Gongjiazhai Road, known for its illicit activities, now echoes with the calls of a lone individual. The surrounding area sees sparse foot traffic. What visage will this area present to the world in the years to come?
