在读了毛姆的《月亮与六便士》《人性的枷锁》《阅读是一座随身携带的避难所》等作品后,最近读完的《Cakes and Ale》(寻欢作乐)再次让我惊叹于他对人性的洞察。 资料来源:William Somerset Maugham.《Cakes and Ale》.Vintage. 这部小说以Driffield夫妇为主线,尤其通过Driffield夫人Rosie这一“离经叛道”的女性形象,展现了毛姆对真诚与自由的致敬。
Driffield先生是一位醉心于文学创作的作家,一开始默默无闻、不被重视,后来变成文学大师。Rosie,全书灵魂所在,一个光芒四射的争议人物。
Rosie出身底层,生性自由、天真慷慨,却因毫不掩饰的欲望和真挚随性的处世方式,被虚伪势利的文人圈子所鄙视和排挤。 毛姆在这本书中毫不掩饰对于Rosie的欣赏和敬意。
这部小说中有很多让人感触深刻的故事情节以及段落。比如书中提到:
'if you've got a pound and you spend nineteen and six you're a rich man, but if you spend twenty shillings and sixpence you re a pauper. Look after the pence, young fellow, and the pounds Il look after themselves.'
如果你兜里有一英镑,你花了十九先令六便士,你仍是富人;可如果你花了二十先令六便士,便成了穷光蛋。年轻人,看紧每一便士,英镑自然会照看好自己。
这段话说的是,精打细算会积少成多,感觉说的很有道理!
'One of the difficulties that a man has to cope with as he goes through life is what to do about the persons with whom he has once been intimate and whose interest for him has in due course subsided.'
人生在世,需要应对的难题之一便就是:如何对待那些曾亲密无间,而后情意变淡的人,也是特别有内涵的一段话。 如果一个人对另一个人带有偏见,那么另一个人无论做什么都无法得到客观的评价,Driffield夫妇二人就是如此。
Driffield先生在学校就读时拿过很多奖学金和奖项,后来毕业去做水手,接着又做过各种活,之后开始写作。
小说中以第一人称讲述者Ashenden的叔叔对此给出的评价是:'he was rather a harum-scarum.Tack of all trades and master of none.That won't last long'
他认为Driffield先生是一个鲁莽的人,做事情样样通样样松,写作这行干不长。总之在他的眼中,Driffiled先生就是一个不靠谱的人。
当然,最后Driffield先生成为了文学大家。他给他人的印象没有架子,就像你我这样的普通人,始终热爱生活。
Ashenden的叔叔认为Driffiled夫妇是没有声誉的人,并且不希望侄子跟他们来往。'They're most disreputable people,don't wish you to associate with them.'
Mary-Ann则告诉叙述者Ashenden她所知道的Driffiled夫人Rosie的事情:与水手、George混在一起,典型属于书中的坏女人形象。
可是在Ashenden印象中,Rosie是一个坦率、真诚的人,她毫不掩饰自己的过往。
她很坦然提到自己当酒吧女郎的经历,并且很理智地感慨:为未来考虑,一个人不能做一辈子酒吧女郎。
'I had a rare old time when I was a barmaid, but of course you can't go on for ever. You have to think of your future.'
即便对Rosie带有偏见的Mary-Ann也不得不赞同,Rosie身上有一股让人不得不喜欢的魔力。 Rosie是一个友善、不摆架子的人('I don't 'ardly know what it is, but there's somethin' you can't 'elp likin' about her. she never once give 'erself airs.)
当George提出给自己的丈夫Driffiled先生提供一个体面、受尊重工作时,Rosie很看得开地说: 'You let him be.'He likes writing, and what I say is, as long as it keeps him happy, why shouldn't he?' 你就随他去吧,他喜欢写作,既然这事能让他高兴,有什么不可以的呢?
是啊,既然做的事情是自己喜欢的事,能让自己心生愉悦的事,有什么不可以的呢?这也是Rosie所践行的生活理念。
当一个人送给Rosie价值260英镑贵重的皮毛斗篷时,与Rosie有私情的Ashenden为此感到生气。
Rosie直率地表达了自己对于这件衣服的喜欢和渴望,以及Ashenden和Driffiled先生买不起如此贵重物品的事实。
接着她说了下面一段话:
'why d'you bother your head about any others? What harm does it do you? Don't I give you a good time! Aren't you happy when you're with me?
It's so silly to be fussy and jealous. Why not be happy with what you can get? Enjoy yourself while you have the chance, I say; we shall all be dead in a hundred years, and what will anything matter then? Let's have a good time while we can.' “你何必为其他人的事而烦恼呢?这对你有什么伤害吗?难道我没让你过得开心吗?你和我在一起时不快乐吗?
计较、吃醋多傻啊!为什么不为眼前拥有的开心呢?要我说,在还有机会的时候,要好好享受生活。
人生苦短,100年以后,我们都不在了,到时候还有什么好在意的呢?趁现在及时行乐、享受生活才对!”
关于这一点,《人性的优点》这本书中提到了安德烈·莫鲁瓦在《本周》杂志上说的话:
“我们常常会为那些毫无意义和不屑一顾的事而烦恼。”
接着他给出了精辟的建议:
“我们来到这世上,不过短短几十年,却把一去不复返的时间浪费在所有人都会在一两年内就抛诸脑后的小事上。不要这样生活。
让我们把生命奉献给值得做的事情和值得付出的情感吧,让我们去感受非凡的思想,去经历真挚的感情,去建立不朽的业绩吧。因为生命太短暂了,不应为琐事而烦恼。”
只能说,这几段文字真实而有道理。
生命太短暂,不要让自己深受琐碎事带来的烦恼,让我们把宝贵的精力,留给真正值得的人和事。
Rosie不顾世俗眼光,勇敢去追求自己认定的爱,达到外人看来有些犯傻的感觉,她离开自己的丈夫,跟着抛妻弃子的George私奔了。
对于这件事,这本书借Mary-Ann的言语表达出来了Rosie对于George深刻的爱。她说:
'He was the only man she ever really fancied. He only 'ad to lift is little finger and she'd leave anyone, no matter who it was' 他(George)是她唯一真正倾心过的男人。只要他抬抬小指头,她就会抛下任何人,而不管对方是谁。
好吧,虽然不太懂她的做法,但却敬佩这份爱的勇气。
关于她为什么选择跟George离开,她的回答是:
'what could I do? I couldn't let him go all that way by himself, with no money perhaps, and him having been always so grand and living in his own house and driving his own trap. It wasn't as if I was afraid of work.'
“我能怎么办呢?总不能让他自己那样离开,也许身无分文,他可一直是个体的面人,住自己的宅子,驾驶自己的马车。我可不是怕吃苦的人。”
这段话让我们看到了Rosie心甘情愿为爱情吃苦的决心。
而Rosie得到了自己想要的爱情,她对George的评价是:
'No woman could want a better husband than what he made me. Never a cross word from the day we married till the day he died, And I'm pleased to say he left me very well provided for.'
Rosie认为,没有哪个女人能得到比他更好的丈夫了。从他们结婚那天到他去世,他从未对自己说过一句让人生气的话。而且很欣慰的是,他给自己留下了相当优渥的生活保障。
后来George去世,Rosie恢复了单身,面对是否会再结婚的问题,她的回答是:
'I'm quite happy as I am. The way I look on it is this: I don't want to marry an old man, and it would be silly at my age to marry a young man. I've had my time and I'm ready to call it a day.' “我很满意现在的生活。我的想法是这样的:我不想嫁给一个老男人,但以我的年纪嫁给一个年轻人又很傻。我已经过了那个年纪,准备好功成身退了。”
爱过,精彩过,没有遗憾,足够了!
这段文字让我想到《绝望的主妇》这Susan说的一段话:'I can wrap myself up in all those memories,and I will be content.'在记忆的包裹着,我感到心满意足。
也许Rosie跟Susan有着同样的感受吧。
当然,这些都是当事人自己的感受,关于这一点,Rosie得到的外人评价是:
After all, let's face it, she was a nymphomaniac!说到底,让我们得面对现实,她就是个色情狂!
没办法,个人主观感受总是跟社会标准以及外人评价不一致。
当然,叙述者Ashenden替Rosie进行了辩护,他说:
She was a very nice woman. I never saw her in a bad temper. You only had to say you wanted something for her to give it to you. I never heard her say a disagreeable thing about anyone. She had a heart of gold.
She didn't bother about things like that. They didn't make her any the less beautiful. And she was as good as she was beautiful.
She was a very simple woman. Her instincts were healthy and ingenuous. She loved to make people happy. She loved Love.
She gave herself as naturally as the sun gives heat or the flowers their perfume. It was a pleasure to her and she liked to give pleasure to others. It had no effect on her character; she remained sincere, unspoiled, and artless!' “她是个很好的女人。我从未见她发过脾气。你只要开口想要什么,她就会给你。我从没听她说过任何人的坏话。她有一颗金子般的心。”
她不在意琐事。那些瑕疵丝毫没有减少她的美丽。而且她的内心和容貌一样美好。
她是个非常单纯的女人。她的本性健康而率真的。她喜欢让人快乐。她热爱爱情本身。
她付出自己就像太阳散发热量、花朵吐露芬芳那样自然。这对她是种愉悦,她也乐于给予他人欢乐。这丝毫没有影响她的品性;她始终真诚、纯粹、自然!”
叙述者Ashenden给了Rosie很高的评价。
据说女主角原型来自毛姆现实生活中的爱慕对象,这就解释通了小说的叙述者对于Rosie的爱和敬佩。 这本小说中,有两段关于“作家生活”的描述,感觉写的很经典。叙述者认为作家是一个充满磨难的生涯,原因如下:
' First he must endure poverty and the world's indifference; then, having achieved a measure of success, he must submit with a good grace to its hazards. He depends upon a fickle public.
He is at the mercy of journalists who want to interview him, and photographers who want to take his picture, of editors who harry him for copy and tax-gatherers who harry him for income tax,
of persons of quality who ask him to lunch and secretaries of institutes who ask him to lecture, of women who want to marry him and women who want to divorce him, of youths who want his auto-graph, actors who want parts and strangers who want a loan, of gushing ladies who want advice on their matrimonial affairs and earnest young men who want advice on their compositions, of agents, publishers, managers, bores, admirers, critics, and his own conscience.
是啊,一开始作家必须忍受贫穷与世人的漠然;待到取得一些成就后,又得承受随之而来的风险。他仰仗于反复无常的读者大众。
他受制于想采访他的记者,想给他拍照的摄影师,催稿的编辑,追缴税的收税人,邀他午宴的名流,请他演讲的学院秘书,想嫁给他的女人,想同他离婚的女人,想要签名的青年,讨要角色的演员,前来借钱的陌生人,咨询婚姻琐事的女士,请教写作问题的认真青年,还有经纪人、出版商、经理、讨厌鬼、仰慕者、评论家,以及他自己那不安的良心。
很形象有趣的一段描述,一个人,在默默无闻的时候,要忍受经济上的清苦以及他人的冷漠,在出名之后,则要应对各种繁琐事务。真的不知道是无名好,还是有名好?
当然,作家有作家的独特优势,也算是对繁琐生活的一种补偿。
'Whenever he has anything on his mind, whether it be a harassing reflection, grief at the death of a friend, unrequited love, wounded pride, anger at the treachery of someone to whom he has shown kindness, in short any emotion or any perplexing thought, he has only to put it down in black and white, using it as a theme of a story or the decoration of an essay, to forget all about it. 也就是说,无论他心中有着怎样的郁结,烦扰的思绪、友人离世的哀恸、无望的爱恋、受伤的自尊、对辜负自己善意人的愤怒,简言之,面对任何情感或困惑,他只需将其付诸笔墨,用作小说的主题或散文的装饰,便能全然释怀。
所以说,'He is the only free man.'他是世间唯一自由的人。
作家可以在自己小说中,安排不同人的人生,可以在小说中以现实喜欢的人为原型来再次表达自己的喜欢,可以以厌恶的人为原型表达自己的憎恶,甚至可以给厌恶的人安排一个解气的结局。
小说就是作家的内心世界,在这里他是如此的自由,可以发泄情绪,可以表达不满,可以抒发遗憾,的确是个自由的人。
迄今为止,读过一些小说,毛姆的《人性的枷锁》、钱锺书先生的《围城》、曹雪芹的《红楼梦》这几本真的特别喜欢,伟大的小说家总能为我们提供观照人性的独特棱镜。
当然,毛姆的这本《寻欢作乐》同样特别值得读。关于这本书的难度,个人整体感觉比《人性的枷锁》略难一点儿,而且单词用法中习惯性地省略了一些h字母,阅读过程中需要适应一下、自行补上。 总之,这是一本很值得阅读的好书!强烈推荐朋友们阅读作者的纸质版书籍,绝对很受益!
