WhatisaDigitalNegative(DNG)?
DigitalNegative(DNG)isanopenlypublishedrawfilespecificationthatstoresthe“raw”pixeldata
capturedbythedigitalcamerasensorbeforeithasbeenconvertedtoJPEGorTIFFalongwithstandard
EXIFmetadata,date,time,cameraused,andcamerasettings.Thisformatisfreelyavailableforother
softwareandhardwarevendorstosupport.
WhatistheAdobe(DNG)Converter?
TheAdobeDNGConverterenablesyoutoeasilyconvertcamera-specificrawfilesfromthesupported
cameraslistedbelowtoamoreuniversalDNGrawfile.
Whatisa“raw”file?
Arawfilecontainsthe“raw”datacapturedbythedigitalcamerasensorbeforeithasbeenconvertedto
JPEGorTIFF.CamerasthatcreateJPEGorTIFFfilesprocess(andinthecaseofJPEGfiles,
compress)thesensordata.Whenworkingwithrawfiles,thefileisnotcompressedorprocessedinthe
camera—instead,oursoftwaregivestheusercompletecontrolovertheconversionsettings.For
example,whitebalanceisnotappliedtotherawfilebutisstoredwiththefilesothesoftwarecandefault
totheoriginallyintendedsetting.OtherinformationcontainedinaDNGfileincludesstandardEXIF
metadata(justlikeinJPEGfiles),date,time,cameraused,andcamerasettings.

WhyconverttoDNGfiles?
Unlikemostmanufacturer-specificrawformats,theDigitalNegativeisanopenlypublishedspecification
thatnotonlyissupportedbyAdobe,butisalsofreelyavailableforothersoftwareandhardwarevendors
tosupport.Consequently,itcanbeasaferfileformattouseforlong-termarchivalpurposes.Archiving
yourfileasadigitalnegativeeliminatesworriesthattherawfilewillnolongerbereadableoncethe
camerathatcreateditbecomesobsolete.
TheDigitalNegativespecificationallowsfornotonlyallofthepixelinformationstoredincurrentraw
formats,butalsoforalloftheadditional,proprietarymetadatathatmanymanufacturersinclude.The
AdobeDNGConvertermayinsomecasesignoresomeofthisproprietarymetadata,andonlyincludethe
basicinformationnecessaryforcreatingahigh-qualityimagefile.Theoriginalrawfile,however,canalso
beembeddedinthenewDNGformattoensureproprietarymetadatafromthemanufacturerisnotlost.

2.SelectthefolderofimagesyouwouldliketoconverttoDNG.
3.SelectthelocationyouwouldlikethenewDNGfilestobesaved.
4.SelectthenameyouwouldliketouseforthenewDNGfiles.
?Ifyouselect“DocumentName,”theexistingnameofthefilewillbeusedwiththenewDNG
extensionadded.
?Youcanchoosetoaddserialnumbersorletterstothename.Anexampleofthenamewill
appearafter“NameExample.”
?Beginnumbering:Enterthestartingserialnumberifyouwouldlikeittobedifferentthanone.
?FileExtension:ThefileextensionisautomaticallysettoDNG.Youcanchoosetheextensionto
beeitherupperorlowercase.
5.Preferencesaresetto“Compressed(lossless)”and“PreserveRawImage”bydefault.Youcan
changethosepreferencesbyclickingon“ChangePreference…”Belowisadescriptionofthe
differentsettings.
?ImageConversionMethod:
oPreserveRawImage–theimagedataisstoredintheoriginal“mosaic”format,if
possible,whichmaximizestheamountofdatapreserved.Mosaicimagedatacanbe
convertedtolineardatabutthereverseisnotpossible.
oConverttoLinearImage–theimagedataisstoredinaninterpolated(“demosaiced”)
format.Thiscanbeusefulifacamera’sparticularmosaicpatternisnotsupportedbya
DNGreader.
