Yunan,locatedinthewesternoftheGuangdongProvince,isasmalltowninthemiddlereachesofXijiangRiver.Therearemanyrichresourcesandkindsofspecialties.Asoneofthenationalgeographicalindications,SeedlessWampee(黄皮)isoneofthemostfamousfruitsamongthem.
SeedlessWampee,relyingonitslarge,fleshy,juicy,tasty,andseedlesscharacteristics,hasbecomethetreasureinWampees.Highstandardfruitsshouldalwaysgrowinasuitableenvironment.Yunanisahillyarea.Forestcoversoverseventypercentofitsarea.Theearth,whichhasaccumulatedplentyoforganicmaterialsfromthecorruptionoffallenleavesforalongtime,whichprovidesthefruittreeswithnecessarynutritionandensuretheniceaspectofthefruits.SeedlessWampeeissuitableforhumidseason.Yunan’sweather,withrainandheatoverthesameperiodandabundantrain,canproviderequiredwaterinSeedlessWampee’sgrowingprocess.Enoughsunshinecanpromotethefruitnutritionsynthesisandmature,whichcreatesequalsizefruits,consistentmaturityandbestquality.
Theremustbeastoryforsuchagoodfruit.Backin1934,ZengNaizhen(曾乃桢),amanfromYunan,quittedhisgovernorpositionofLechangCounty(乐昌县),andcamebacktohishometownandbuiltavillawhichnamedGanyuan(干园).HelearnedfromtheelderthatWampeecanmakethehouseauspicious(吉祥)andhealthyforever.So,hesentpeopletocollectabatchofgoodWampeevarietiesandplantedtheminthegarden.Afterafewyears,thetreesbecamelushandstartedtobearfruits.Onesummer,hisdaughterreturnedfromotherplaces.Whenshewalkedthroughthewoods,shefoundthattwoWampeetreesborefruitswhichlookedgoldenandbright.Thenshepickedsomeandatethemonebyone.Theywereallseedless.Therefore,thesetwoWampeetreeshavebecometheparenttreesandstillbeenleafyandfruitfuluptonowfor80years.
SeedlessWampeeisoneofthemainlylocaleconomicagricultureproducts.Atthesametimeitalsodrivesthedevelopmentoflocallabor.EveryJuly,endlessWampeetreesaregrowingalongthebothsidesoftownroads.Overonemonth’spickingperiodnotonlybringsthejoyofharvesttothelocalpeople,butalsobringsbackthefamiliartasteeveryyear.
