Underthesky,withthedazzlingbrightmoon,familiesreunite,talkingandlaughingwitheachother,enjoyingthebeautyandthebrightnessofthemoonbytastingthedeliciousCantonesemoon-cakes,eatingfreshfruitsanddrinktea.Howarelaxingandhappyscene!ItisasceneontheeveningoftheMid-AutumnFestival.ItfallsonAugust15oflunarcalendar,whichisatraditionalfestivalofHanNationalityonwhichpeopleviewandadmirethemoon,celebratingtheyear’sharvestandtheirfamilies’reunion.Themoononthisdayissaidtobeatitsbrightest,fullestandbiggestinawholeyear.Onthisday,moon-cakesareindispensablefortheCantonese.
Cantoneseregardthedayasasignificantfestival.Theymakeorselectmoon-cakes,fruitsandmakeagoodpreparationtocelebratethefestival.Duringthisperiod,manykindsofseasonalfruitsbecomeripe,sonsanddaughtersreturnhomefromtheplaceswheretheystudyorworktohaveafamilyreunionpartyortotakepartinsomegatheringwithfriends.WhentheMid-AutumnFestivalcomes,afterhavingareuniondinner,theCantonesewillputatablecoveredwithmoon-cakes,fruitsandteaonthebalconyoroutsidetheirhouses.Familiesgathertogethertowaitforthemoontobefull.Whileviewingandadmiringthemoon,peoplesharethemoon-cakes,notonlytheflavorofthemoon-cakes,butalsothehappinessoffamilyaffection.Itisawarmwaytoexpresslove,deliverloveandfeellove.
Moon-cake,asitiscalled,itisroundandisfamousforitsvarioustypesoffillings.Theseasonalroundcakestraditionallyhaveasweetfillingoflotusseedpasteorredbeanpasteandoftenhaveoneormoresaltedduckeggsinthecentertorepresentthemoon.Cantonesemoon-cake,asanindispensabledeliciousfoodofthefestival,isakindofgiftpeoplesenttofamiliesandfriendsduringthefestivalandusuallyeatenonfamilygatherings.Therearecharactersof“longevity”,“goodfortune”and“harmony”onthetopofit.Theysymbolizethegatheringoffriendsandfamily.
ThereasonwhyCantonesepeopleeatmoon-cakesonMid-AutumnFestivalcomesfromalegend.ThelegendsaysthatduringtheYuanDynasty,anundergroundgroupledbyZhuYuanzhangwasdeterminedtoridthecountryofMongoliandominance.Themoon-cakewascreatedtocarryasecretmessage.Whenthecakewasopenedandthemessagewasread,anuprisingwasunleashedwhichsuccessfullyroutedtheMongolians.Ithappenedatthetimeofthefullmoon,which,somesay,explainswhymoon-cakesareeatenatthisday.
TherearesomespecialmeaningsintheshapeoftheCantonesemoon-cakes.TheCantonesemoon-cakesarealwaysinroundshape.“Round”hasaspecialmeaningforChinese.WhenChinesepeopleseethemoon,theywouldassociatewiththeirhometown,families,childhoodandfriends,especiallywhenthemoonisatitsfullest.InChina,thefullmoonsymbolizesreunion,harmonyandgoodharvest.ReunionisthemostimportantconnotationofMid-AutumnFestival.That’swhymoon-cakesarealwaysshapedround.
Withoutmoon-cakes,theCantoneseMid-AutumnFestivalwillbeincompleteandimperfect.Notmerelybecauseitrepresentsatraditionandcustom,butacultureconnotation,anaffectivetieforpeoplewholivefarawayfromeachother.
