Abstract:ObjectiveToobservethetherapeuticeffectofexternalapplicationofherbalmedicineforankylosing
spondylitis(AS).MethodsTwohundredandseventy-nineASpatientswererandomizedintogroupA(N=
)andgroupB(N=).Thetwogroupsreceivedoraluseofsulfasalazine,andgroupAadditionally
receivedexternalapplicationofherbalmedicalointment(mainlycomposedofPheretima,SquamaManis,
RhizomaDioscoreaeNipponicae,RadixRehmanniaePreparata,RhizomaCibotii,CortexEucommiae,Radix
Dipsaci)on～pairsofbilateralacupointsofJiaji,dressingchangeonceeverythreedays,forcontinuous
months.Aftertreatment,thetherapeuticeffectwasevaluated.Theprimaryoutcomemeasuresofhealthgeneral
score(BAS-G),diseaseactivityindex(BASDAI),functionindex(BASFI),Likertfour-gradescoresof
generalpainandrachialgia,durationofmorningstiffness,generalassessmentbyphysicianwereobservedbefore
andaftertreatment.Thesecondaryoutcomemeasuresofocciputtowalldistance,fingertofloordistance,chest
expansion,Schoberstest,spinalmovement,“”shapetestwerecompared.Thechangesoferythrocyte
sedimentationrate(ESR),C-reactiveprotein(CRP),complementsand(CandC)aswellasthe
adverseactionswerealsoobserved.ResultsAftertreatment,patientswereclinicallyrelieved,markedly
effective,effective,ineffective,andthetotaleffectiveratewas.%ingroupA;patientswere
clinicallyrelieved,markedlyeffective,effective,ineffective,andthetotaleffectiveratewas.%
ingroupB.Thedifferenceofthetherapeuticeffectwassignificantbetweenthetwogroups(P<.).The

andClevelsweredecreasedinthetwogroupsaftertreatment(P<.orP<.comparedwiththosebefore
treatment),andthedecreaseofESR,CRPandCwasobviousingroupA(P<.orP<.comparedwith
thoseingroupB).LocalskinrashandpruritusoccurredinpatientsofgroupA,localpruritusoccurredin
patientsofgroupA,andnoadversereactionwasfoundingroupB.ConclusionExternalapplicationofherbal
medicineexertsaneffectforankylosingspondylitisbyrelievingthesymptomsandsigns.
