FailureModeEffectAnalysisisasystematicapproachofidentifyingandinvestigatingpotentialDesignorProcessweakness.
Thismeansthatit’saprocessthattriestounderstandallthefuturepotentialproblems(FailureModes)ofadesignorprocess.Onceallthepotentialfailuremodes,includingtheextremeandunlikelyones,havebeendetailed,thenextstepistothenunderstandtheEffect.TheEffectiswhatwillhappeniftheFailureModeoccurs,willthepartjuststopworkingorcoulditkillsomebody.

OncealltheFailureModesandtheirEffectsareunderstood,theinformationisthenAnalyzedandaRiskPriorityNumber(RPN)isgenerated.TheRiskPriorityNumberisanumberwhichrateseachFailureModeforitsSeverity(whateffectwillithaveonthecustomer),itsOccurrence(whatarethechancesofthecustomerfindingtheproblem),anditsDetection(whatarethechancesoffindingtheproblemin-house,beforethecustomer).
TheRPNfiguresarethenputintonumericalorder,andtheoneswiththelargestRPNfiguresshouldbepriorities.Workingonthesemayinvolvere-designofapartoraprocess,orjustaminortweak,theaimistoreduceitsRPNfiguretoaverylownumber.
