四、文本精讲
下面我们来逐句看一下今天的这个片段：
The fountains mingle with the river, 泉水与河流混合，

这里有个表达，叫做 mingle with sth.，意思是 “ 和 ……混合 ” 。
And the rivers with the ocean; 河流和海洋混合；
第二句话和第一句呼应，所以直接省略了动词 mingle。
另外，第一行诗指的是 “ 泉水汇入一条河 ” ，所以用的是单数 the river；第二行诗指的是
“ 众多河流汇入大海 ” ，所以用的复数形式 the rivers。
The winds of heaven mix forever 天空的风永远混合
和什么混合呢？
With a sweet emotion; 和一种甜美的情感；
这句话里有两个点大家需要注意：
首先， heaven 除了有 “ 天堂 ” 的意思，也有 “ 天空 ” 的意思；
另外， mix 作动词也是 “ 混合 ” 的意思，和 mingle 的用法接近，区别在于：
mingle with 突出的是混合后还保留有彼此的特性。比如水和油混合之后，两者还是各自
具备自己的特点。在这首诗里，泉水和海水虽然混合，但是这两种水本质上也是有区别
的；
而 mix with 指的是融为一 体变成一种新事物。比如把糖和水混合在一起，糖就会融入水
中。在这首诗里，不同风向和甜美的情感混合后，营造出了一种缠绵的氛围。当然，这是
一种拟人的手法，目的是为整首诗营造浪漫的基调。

从整体来看，前四行诗表达的意思相同，那就是：无论是江河湖海还是八方风向，都不是
孤立存在的，而是彼此相依相偎、携手共存。

第六和第七行是一个完整的句子， All things（所有事物）是主语； by a law divine（通
过一种神圣的定律）是方式状语，其中 divine（神圣的）作后置定语修饰前面的 law（定
律）；然后是地点状语和动词 In one spirit meet and mingle— （在一种精神下相遇、
混合）。按照正常的英语句子顺序，这句话也就是说： All things meet and mingle in
one spirit by a divine law—（所有事物都通过一条神圣的定律在一种 精神里相遇并相
容 —）
紧接着是一个破折号引导的补充说明的句子：
Why not I with thine?
thine 是个代词，相当于 your（你的）或者 yours（你的东西），是在早期英语诗歌或者
宗教作品当中的常用词。这里的 thine 结合上一句话，指的是 your spirit（ “ 你的精神 ”
或 “ 你的心灵 ” ）， Why not I with thine?也就是说：为什么我不能和你的心灵融为一
体呢？

读到这里大家就明白了，雪莱通过自然现象共存的定律，来引出自己和心上人应该成双成
对的浪漫意境。无论是从层层铺垫的表达手法，还是从整体语境的细腻编排，都充满了浓
浓的爱意和深深的痴情。
我们继续来看这首诗的第二节，铺垫手法和第一节类似，都是从大自然的普遍现象入手，
最后引出诗人对心上人的强烈感情：
See, the mountains kiss high heaven, 你看，群山亲吻着高高的天空，
And the waves clasp one another; 波浪也相互紧紧拥抱在一起；
clasp 作动词，意思 是 “ 握紧、抱紧 ” 。
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
这是一个 if 引导的条件状语从句，字面意思是说：没有姐妹花能被宽容，如果它轻蔑自己
的兄弟。但是同学们可能就不理解，为什么 sister-flower（姐妹花）里还有 brother
（兄弟）呢？其实很简单，用大白话来讲，所谓的 “ 姐妹花 ” ，指的就是生长在一起的花

朵，彼此共存，共同营造出整个花丛的美丽。但是如果生长在一起的姐妹花瞧不上旁边的
姐妹花（也就是姐妹花的 “ 兄弟花朵 ” 或者 “ 同胞花朵 ” ），彼此孤立存在，就相当于打
破了花丛的整体美，破坏了花丛的和谐。这就叫做 No sister-flower would be
forgiven if it disdained its brother;
我们再把这四行诗完整看一遍：

beam 作名词，表示 “ 光线、一束光 ” ； moonbeams 指的就是 “ 一束束的月光 ” ，相
比 moonlight，意境营造得更加细腻。
然后是破折号引出的最后一句话，也是第二节诗里最重要的一句话：
What is all this sweet work worth 这全部甜蜜的作品有什么值得的
If thou kiss not me? 如果你不吻我的话？
thou 也是早期英语诗歌或者宗教作品当中的常用代词，相当于 you（ “ 你 ” 或者 “ 你
们 ” ）；另外， kiss not me 相当于 does not kiss me。
这句话也就是说：再美的自然风光，也是来自于自然界事物彼此的依恋和衬托；而如果没
有你的陪伴，就打破了世间万物成双成对的规律，再美的风景 也就残缺不全了。最后一句
话，通过前面的层层铺垫，一下子就能让我们感受到一种气势恢宏同时又感人肺腑的爱情
观。
我们再把最后四行诗完整看一遍：

表达爱意的诗歌我之前也看过一些，但是能够把爱情 上升到自然哲学高度的诗歌，雪莱的
Love’s Philosophy（爱的哲理）是当之无愧的巅峰之作。虽说世事难料，很多时候爱
情的保质期也都很短，但是拥有过像雪莱这样轰轰烈烈的爱情经历的人，都应该能够体会
到这首诗里蕴藏的巨大力量。
五、亮解单词
下面我们一起来看一下这篇文章里的核心词汇：
1. fountain [‘fa ?ntn] n. 泉水；喷泉；源泉
这个词前面的 fount 和 found（建立）有关，突出的是 “ 从底部向上建起 ” ；而
fountain 这个词，意思是 “ 泉水、喷泉 ” ，也就是 “ 地下喷射出水面的水 ” 。
生活当中， fountain 也可以表示 “ 源泉 ” ，是一种修辞的用法。比如说： Ancient
Greece was a fountain of wisdom and philosophy.（古希腊是智慧和哲学的发源

2. mingle [‘m ??ɡl] vt.&vi. 混合

这个词前面的 ming 和 among（在 ……中间）这个单词里的 mong 有关系， mingle 的
意思是 “ 混合 ” ，也就是 “ 两种或多种事物缠在一起 ” ，但是往往混合之后还能分辨出彼
此。比如 说： If we mingle with the crowd, we should not be noticed.（如果我们
混在人群里，就不会被注意到。）但这只是人和人站在一起，而不是合为一体，大家要理
解 mingle 的本意。
而 mix 这个词，往往指的是 “ 混合之后分辨不清楚彼此 ” 。比如说： Mix the sugar and
the water in a cup.（把糖和水倒在杯子里搅拌一下。）这个时候糖和水就融为一体无法
分辨彼此了，所以这两个单词大家要注意区分。
3. divine [d?’va ?n] adj. 神圣的
这是个宗教词汇，也是个来自于拉丁语的词汇，作形容词意思是 “ 神圣的 ” ，尤其指的是
“ 和神相关的 ” 。汉语里讲的 “ 天道 ” ，英语就叫做 divine law； “ 天意 ” ，英语就叫做
divine will。
4. clasp [kl?sp] vt. 握紧；抱紧
英语里有个单词，叫做：
grasp [ɡr?sp] vt. 抓紧；抓牢
这个词来自 grab（抓住），作动词的时候，意思是 “ 抓紧、抓牢 ” 。比如说： He
grasped both my hands.（他紧紧地抓住我的双手。）

另外， grasp 也可以表示 “ 理解、领会 ” ，也就是 “ 抓住了一件事的要点 ” 。比如说： I
think I grasped the main points of the class.（我觉得我理解了这堂课的重点。）
今天文本里的 clasp，和 grasp 无论是读音和写法都很像，发生的是辅音字母 c-g 以及 l-
r 的通假变化。 clasp 作动词，意思是 “ 扣紧、抱紧 ” 。比如说： He clasped his hands
tightly together.（他双手十字交叉紧紧扣在一起。）或者说： She clasped the
children in her arms.（她把孩子们紧紧地搂在怀里。）
另外， clasp 也可以作名词，表示 “ 扣环 ” ，也就是 “ 紧紧扣在一起的装置 ” 。比如 “ 项
链上的扣环 ” ，英语就叫做 the clasp of a necklace。
5. disdain [d?s’de ?n] vt. 鄙视；不屑于做 n. 鄙视，轻蔑
前缀 dis-表示否定，后面的 dain 和我们之前学过的 deign（屈尊）相关，再往前推，和
dignity（尊严、尊贵）相关。所谓的 disdain，就是 “ 不把别人当回事、看不起别人 ” ，
也就是动词 “ 鄙视 ” 的意思。比如说： It’s wrong to disdain a man merely
because he’s poor.（只因为一个人穷就鄙视他是不对的。）
英语里有个常见的表达，叫做 disdain to do sth.，表示 “ 鄙视、不屑于做某事 ” 。比如
说： He disdained to turn to others for help.（他不屑于去寻求别人的帮助。）
disdain 也可以作名词，表示 “ 鄙视、轻蔑 ” 。比如说： He was treated with disdain.
（他受到了鄙视。）
6. moonbeam [‘mu ?nbi?m] n.（一线）月光

这是个合成词，后面的 beam 和 be（是、存在）相关，早期指的是 “ 茁壮成长的树
木 ” ，后来又因为树木又细又直的主干，延延伸出了 “ 一束光、光线 ” 的意思。 “ 手电筒
的光束 ” ，英语就叫做 the beam of a flashlight。
