Michelangelo - Artist and Man (3)

In 1508, Julius gave Michelangelo the most challenging assignment of his life—to

paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The nearly 6,000 square-foot ceiling was an

enormous undertaking. And over the next four years, Michelangelo would labor to

the point of exhaustion on the project. A different artist might have decided to

rush through the commission, doing just enough to get by so he could return to

work of his own choosing. But once he knew he could not escape the ceiling,

Michelangelo became determined to create images that would confirm his lofty

vision of his own talents and do justice to the glory of God.

Standing, not lying as legend would have it for hours at a time on a scaffolding 70

feet in the air was a grueling physical trial. Finally, on November 1st, 1512,

Michelangelo''s creation was revealed to the world. The result was miraculous. In

an unparalleled display of physical effort and artistic skill, the surface of the ceiling

had been covered with 33 panels, containing more than 300 painted figures.

Michelangelo Buonarroti had sacrificed four years of his life for art, and in the

process, brought art to life. Against his will, the greatest sculptor of the age had

become the greatest painter as well. At the age of 37, he was hailed by his

contemporaries as “the Divine Michelangelo”.

In 1508, 1508 年,

Julius gave Michelangelo the most challenging assignment of his life 朱利奥二

—to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

The nearly 6,000 square-foot ceiling

was an enormous undertaking.

And over the next four years, 在接下来的四年时间里,

Michelangelo would labor to the point of exhaustion on the project.

P5 / Day77

A different artist

might have decided to rush through the commission,

生活当中表示 “ 仓促完成、草草了事 ” ;

doing just enough to get by

so he could return to work of his own choosing.

这里的 work 是个名词, of his own choosing 是个介词短语作后置定 语修饰 work,表示

A different artist might have decided to rush through the commission, doing just

enough to get by so he could return to work of his own choosing.

But once he knew he could not escape the ceiling,

Michelangelo became determined to create images

that would confirm his lofty vision of his own talents

lofty 的意思是 “ 高耸的、高傲的 ” ;这里的 that would confirm his lofty vision of his

and do justice to the glory of God.

But once he knew he could not escape the ceiling,

Michelangelo became determined to create images that would confirm his lofty

vision of his own talents

and do justice to the glory of God.

Standing, not lying as legend would have it

for hours at a time 每次几个小时

on a scaffolding 在一个脚手架上

70 feet in the air

was a grueling physical trial.

Finally, on November 1st, 1512,

Michelangelo''s creation was revealed to the world.

The result was miraculous.

In an unparalleled display

of physical effort and artistic skill,

P10 / Day77

the surface of the ceiling

had been covered with 33 panels,

containing more than 300 painted figures.

Creation of Adam),《亚当和夏娃被逐出伊甸园》( The Expulsion of Adam and

Michelangelo Buonarroti had sacrificed four years of his life for art,

and in the process,

brought art to life.

Against his will, 违背了他的意愿,

the greatest sculptor of the age

had become the greatest painter as well.

At the age of 37, 37 岁的时候,

he was hailed by his contemporaries as “the Divine Michelangelo”.

1. assignment [?’sa ?nm?nt] n.

assign [?’sa ?n] vt.

This room was assigned to the new girl.(这间房间分配给了新来的女

The teacher assigned a very easy task to the children.(老师给孩子们

What is today’s assignment in history?

2. exhaustion [?g’z ??st?(?)n] n.

exhaust [?ɡ’z ?st] vt.

They had exhausted their supply

of food within three days.(他们三天内就把所有粮食吃光了。)

This hard labor exhausted him.(这个苦力活儿让他精疲力尽。)

3. confirm [k?n’f ?m] vt.

Please call us to confirm your reservation.(预定后请来电确认。) His

guilty expression confirmed my suspicions.(他内疚的表情证实了我的猜疑。)

4. lofty [‘l ?fti] adj.

loft [l?ft] n.

I keep my

old books in the loft.(我把我的旧书都放在阁楼上。)

比如说 lofty ceiling(高高的顶棚) , lofty

tower(高耸的塔楼)等等。

比如说 lofty ambition(崇高的抱负) , lofty

ideal(崇高的理想)等等。

He has a lofty attitude toward

other people.(他对待别人有一种高傲的态度。)

5. legend [‘l ?d??nd] n.

This film is based on a legend.(本片基于一

He is a legend in his country.(他在他的国家是一个传奇人物。)

6. scaffolding [‘sk?f ?ld??] n.

7. grueling [‘ ɡru?li?] adj.

gruel [‘gr ??l] n.

This is a very grueling task.(这是一项非常磨人的工作。)

8. display [d?’sple ?] n.

His action is a display of courage.(他的行动是一种勇气的展示。)

The exhibition gives local

artists an opportunity to display their work.(这次展览为当地艺术家提供了展示自己

Toys were displayed in the store window.(商店橱窗上陈列

9. contemporary [k?n’temp( ?)r(?r)?] adj.

The book was based on the

contemporary records of the event.(这本书是基于同时期的事件记录而编写的。)

He was a contemporary

of Michelangelo and may have known him.( 他是米开朗基罗的同代人,而且可能认
