2019-2021北京重点校初三(上)期中英语汇编阅读理解1.(2021 北京四中九年级期中)Is imagination more imp
ortant than knowledge?Berlin,1929.The superstar physicist,Albert
Einstein talked about how he accounted for his discoveries."I''m e
nough of an artist to draw freely on my imagination, which I think
is more important than knowledge.Knowledge is limited.Imaginatio
n encircles the world."Knowledge versus imagination.Einstein''s ap
horism(格言)reflects a repeated theme in human thought. The ancient
dichotomy(对立)between what we know and what we imagine is found in
every field of human intellectual achievement.Imagination often
belongs to artists and geniuses, while knowledge, which results fro
m a brush with reality,is black﹣and﹣white,logical﹣the field of pe
ople like accountants. Our view of which is more important depends
on our personality.Like many dichotomies, this one is an oversimp
lification. We know that the brilliance of many great artists was
grounded in years of hard training;and that excitingly imaginativ
e museums and highly creative accountants do exist. In fact,we hav
e always relied on a blend of imagination and knowledge. Both are
valuable. What then is the relationship between them?Knowledge is
often considered a stepping stone to imagination. It is a stored a
nd shared treasury of publicly acceptable thoughts, many frozen in
to physical symbols (written or spoken).Knowledge coded, stored an
d expressed using symbols can be broken up and put together again
in various new combinations(结合).It is this act of recombination
which underlies the power to imagine. Our imagination is and must
be grounded in our knowledge. The more memories we gain, the more m
aterial we have to work with, the richer are the fruits of our ima
gination.Another way of thinking about the balance between imagin
ation and knowledge is to consider each as private or public, indi
vidual or group.Knowledge strengthens group bonding, but the rise
of new knowledge, for example,in the sciences can put a group''s ve
ry existence(存在)at risk.Imagination can challenge rules and tradi
tions;yet shared acts of imagination can also help to strengthen
intra﹣ group bonds. The greatest acts of imagination – from Bach''s
Cello Suites to Star Wars movies –require not only creation but
admiration:they depend on being heard, seen and understood within
a cultural environment.In today''s world,we seem increasingly to p
refer imagination, but that preference is culture﹣dependent.Imagin
ation flourishes when its products are highly valued. In other wor
ds,the better people''s lives are,the more freedom to creativity.H
owever,during times of difficulty or danger,shared knowledge,also
known as "culture" or "tradition",may be valued more.Resources p
reviously put into artistic creativity may be channeled(输送) into
efforts to make things better, leading to reduced artistic output.
This brings us to another view of the relationship between knowle
dge and imagination:its dynamic nature.So was Einstein right?Is i
magination more important than knowledge? It depends on whom you a
sk,what you ask about, and when.(1)Why does the writer mention Alb
ert Einstein''s aphorism at first?A.To show the importance of imag
ination.B.To disagree with Albert Einstein''s opinion.C.To bring o
ut the question of which is more important.D.To explain why Alber
t Einstein made great discoveries.(2)According to the writer, what
''s the relationship between knowledge and imagination?A.The knowl
edge we get is a result of our imagination.B.We build imagination
when we reorganize some knowledge.C.We can better understand the
knowledge through imagination.D.The combination of knowledge and
imagination creates power.(3)What can we learn from the passage?
A.Both knowledge and imagination can become a test to a certain g
roup.B.Imagination is personally different while knowledge is sha
red socially.C.People are better at imagination if they value the
ir culture and tradition.D.Artistic creations increase peoples'' a
dmiration in a cultural environment.(4)The underlined word "dynam
ic"in Paragraph 6 probably means__________.A.constantly changingB
.especially confusingC.surprisingly similarD.highly positive2.(20

cial intelligence(AI)program which has largely solved a complicat
ed(复杂的)puzzle that has challenged scientists for 50 years. The suc
cess could lead to huge advances in health care.DeepMind is a Lon
don﹣based research lab which has made the news several times befo
re.Its computer systems have beaten human experts at games like G
o,chess, and the video game StarCraft. But this challenge was compl
etely different. The new puzzle solved by DeepMind is "protein fol
ding"(蛋白质折叠).Proteins are tiny, strangely﹣shaped chains of molecul
es(分子)called amino acids(氨基酸).Proteins make up the bodies of all
living things.A protein starts as a long, thin chain that looks a
little like a piece of string. But then, based on the amino acids i
n the chain,it folds into a certain 3 D shape.Scientists have fou
nd over 200 million different kinds of proteins, but they don''t kn
ow what shape most of them take. The shape of a protein controls h
ow it acts.Based on their shapes, some proteins join together like
puzzle pieces.In living things,proteins serve many purposes.Some
proteins are used for building, others for carrying messages, othe
rs for causing chemical reactions.Knowing how these proteins are
formed is important. The shape can make the difference between som
ething that''s helpful and something that can make you sick. Many m
edicines work by targeting the shape of a protein that is causing
the illness. But uncovering the secrets behind how proteins fold
has been slow and difficult. In some cases,it has taken years for
scientists to learn how one simple protein folds. Now DeepMind''s A
I has shown that it can often do that same job in just a few days
.To complete this, the scientists created a program called AlphaFo
ld using an AI method known as"Deep Learning".In deep learning,co
mputer programs sort deeply through huge amounts of information,a
llowing them to find patterns that humans are often unable to not
ice. These patterns can then be applied in new and surprising ways
.AlphaFold was trained by feeding it information about the makeup
of 170,000 proteins and how they folded.Still,AlphaFold is a hug
e advance and will lead to big changes in science and medicine.De
epMind says it plans to publish a paper on AlphaFold, and is worki
ng on ways to share the technology with other researchers.Once Al
phaFold was trained,DeepMind entered it in a contest for solving
protein folding challenges.AlphaFold did much better than other c
omputer systems. And on two﹣thirds of the proteins,it did about as
well as real scientists do in the lab.The idea that a computer c
an quickly figure out how a protein folds is surprisingly good ne
ws.In the future it could allow scientists to quickly learn about
the causes of some diseases, and come up with medicines and other
tools to fight these diseases.Though AlphaFold can figure out th
e shape for a wide variety of proteins,it''s not perfect. It''s like
ly that there will be many proteins that AlphaFold, with its curre
nt abilities, won''t be able to handle.(1)What can we know about pr
oteins from the passage?A.Proteins look like tiny puzzles.B.Medic

find different proteins.D.The shapes of proteins decide the natur

ss media are tools of communication and allow us to record and pa

have you imagined what life would be without the media? Are you a
media user who would go mad after two hours without TV,friend req
uests, exciting online games and your mobile—or would you easily s
urvive?Recently, university students around the world were asked t
o volunteer in a global experiment called Unplugged. It was design
ed to see how young people would react if they were asked to obse
rve a total media ban(禁止)by unplugging(拔插头)all forms of media dev

findings. However, during the experiment,Dr.Gerodimos said there we
re already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. He
said:"They''re reporting withdrawal(孤僻)signs,overeating,feeling ne
rvous,isolated and disconnected."During their 24﹣hour unpleasant
experience, three volunteers had to put up with one interruption f
rom the media:a BBC reporter plus cameraman who followed them aro
und for the day. They were asked to write down 100 lines about the
ir day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day w
hen they had access to their laptops.Elliot Day wrote:"Today,my w
hole morning routine was thrown up into the air.Despite being awa
re of the social importance of the media,I was surprised by how e
mpty my life felt without the radio or newspapers."From Caroline
Scott,we read:"I didn''t expect it,but being taken away from the m

o much harder to carry out than usual...I didn''t break out in a c
old sweat like Dr.Roman Gerodimos expected us all to,but it''s not
something I would like to do again!"And Charlotte Gay wrote:"I h
ave to say the most difficult item for me to be has been without
my mobile;not only is it a social thing,it''s my main point of com
munication."Earlier in the year,a UK government study found that
in the UK we spend about half our waking hours using the media,of
ten plugged into several things at once. And a recent study by Nie
lson found that on average,US teenagers send and receive over 3,0
00 texts per month—that''s about six texts per waking hour. So,with
technology continuing to develop at an alarming rate, how much ti
me will you set aside for sleep in the future?(1)According to the
passage, what do you learn about the global experiment called Unp

They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town,

ctly ImperfectThe artist Leonardo da Vinci, perhaps best known for
painting the Mona Lisa, produced a drawing called the Vitruvian M
an.In it,da Vinci showed his idea of the perfectly sized male bod
y.But is this really what a perfect body looks like?An imperfect
manConsider Michael Phelps. The winningest swimmer of all time,Phe
lps earned 28 Olympic medals. His body does not look like the Vitr
uvian Man.In fact,Phelps'' body is quite unusual. The best swimmers
tend to have long torsos(躯干)and short legs.Phelps is 6 feet 4 in
ches tall, but his torso is as long as what you would expect to se
e in a man who is 6 feet 8 inches tall. His legs are the length ty
pical of a man who is 5 feet 10 inches.Phelps has long arms too.L
ike the Vitruvian Man,most people have a wingspan roughly the sam
e as their height.Phelps'' wingspan is 6 feet 7 inches,three inche
s longer than his height. His ankles are extremely flexible and hi
s feet are big.So Phelps'' legs act like flippers(脚蹼)when he swims
.No one could argue that Phelps has a perfect body in da Vinci''s
sense. But is it correct to say it is imperfect? What does "perfect
ion" mean when we are talking about human biology?Does it even ex
ist? What is physical perfection?Maybe perfection has more to do w
ith how a body works than how it looks. How we work actually depen
ds upon how well we fit into our environment. Here''s an example fr
om the animal kingdom.Imagine brown rabbits and white rabbits in
a snowy field.Under these conditions,predators(捕食者)are less likel
y to see and catch the white rabbits. In a summertime field—all br
own soil and green and golden plants—white rabbits are more visib
le(可见的) and easier to catch.Neither white nor brown fur is perfec
t for rabbit survival.Rabbits need different bodies for different
seasons. And in fact,in some types of rabbits, fur color changes w
ith the seasons.Like rabbits, all living things adapt to their env
ironments. They need some changes to help thrive (茁壮成长) in their s
pecific environments.But evolution(演变)isn''t engineering.Often,imp
erfections that don''t affect survival too badly get passed down t
hrough the generations.Variation(变化)as a way to successMichael Ph
elps'' body is not perfectly symmetrical(对称的)or balanced. His physi
cal variations, however, may have given him the advantages to be a
close﹣to﹣perfect swimmer.Phelps'' case is not the only one;top ath
letes show great variability that provides them with the physical
characteristics to approach perfection in action.Usain Bolt,an O
lympic sprinter(短跑运动员),has legs so long that it takes him four to
five fewer steps to complete a 100﹣meter race than his competito
rs.Simone Biles, another Olympic gold medalist,is both strong and
small. It is perfect for her sport of gymnastics. She may also have
a better﹣than﹣average ability to sense where her body is in spac
e,perhaps making jumps easier than it would be for an average per
son.No athlete is born with the skills to win gold medals, though.
Those achievements require years of effort.Using variation to you
r advantageDa Vinci''s drawing of the Vitruvian Man put maths and
art together. To da Vinci, the Vitruvian Man showed perfect proport
ions(比例).It was his image of the perfectly formed man.Da Vinci is
a time﹣honored artist,but is there really such a thing as a perf
ect body? No.In biology, there is no such thing as one perfect body
.In fact, variation in all living things, including us,is the rule.
This variation is important for our life.Human variation has allo
wed us to live in wildly different environments—the tropics, deser
ts,and the Arctic—and to develop many different physical, mental,a
nd emotional talents. Not only is there no perfect human body, but
also our species thrives because we are different from one anothe

oks.Let us call this collection an anti﹣library. If you think you
already know everything about a subject, you''re cutting yourself o
ff from a steam of information at an artificial(假的)point. So a gro
wing library of books you haven''t read means you''re consistently

t all songs have the same effect. The research was led by Dennis H
su of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwester University
in the US.His team had people listen to 31 songs of different typ
es.The listeners felt powerful after listening to some songs, such
as Queen''s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited Get Ready for This.R
esearchers also found that high﹣power music made people want to t
ake control in social events and come fist in competition. That ma
tters a lot in sports. "It''s commonly said that sports are 90 per
cent mental and only 10 percent physical,"The Huffington Post rep
orted.Great athletes know this idea well.NBA player Kobe Bryant,f
or example, often put on big headphones and even fell into deep th
ought to boost his game and reduced his anxiety. As for the reason
for music''s magical power,Hsu''s team came up with one possible e
xplanation:when people hear music that expresses a sense of power
,they mimic(模拟)these feelings in their mind. When choosing music,w
e also need to look at the type of music, according to researchers
.In previous research by the Music in Exercise and Sports Group a
t Brunei University in London, they found that pop was perfect for
slower,more repetitive﹣type tasks.If you''re warming up or coolin
g down after exercises, pop songs are the correct choice.Dance mus

because it''s "fast and rhythmical(有节奏感的)"During high﹣intensity(高强

wever,without failure,progress would be impossible.In fact,the wo
rd success comes from the Latin succedere, meaning"to come after".
And what does success usually come after?Failure. It seems that on
e cannot exist without the other.Every failure—even the worst one
s—helps us learn to do things differently in the future."Learning
from the past mistakes and making changes helped me to reach the
top of Everest successfully,"says mountaineer Pete Athans, who ha
s now reached the world''s highest peak(山峰)seven times.Failure al
so reminds us that things can go wrong—sometimes with te
rrible results.Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner is the first wom
an to reach the top of all 14 of the world''s 8,000﹣meter peaks wi
thout extra oxygen(氧气).In 2007,while climbing in Nepal, she was in

d she had to learn from her experience and move on.Accepting fail
ure is not easy for many, though. We are often reluctant to tell pe
ople that we are failures because our good name depends on succes
s.However,things are slowly changing.In the past ten years,some s
cientific magazines﹣mostly in medicine﹣have published reports of
failed experiments. The belief is that the science community can a
lso learn from"negative"results and that this can finally lead to
positive outcomes. The business world already understands the val
ue of negative results.Eli Lilly and Company has failure parties
to study data about medicine that doesn''t work.In fact, one of the
business world''s most famous failures became one of its biggest
successes. In the early 1990s,Apple Corporation created the Apple
Newton. It was one of Apple''s biggest failures. However,Apple''s CEO
,Steve Jobs, believed the product had potential(潜力)and he began to
improve it.In time, this led to the creation of the iPhone and th
e iPad,two of the company''s most successful products. The story of
the Apple Newton can teach us another important lesson about fai

most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides

scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.
"When we say some people ''sweet'',we mean they are kind and friend

BS News18.(2020 北京四中九年级期中)It seems that we have it backward in ou

really hard,"or"I''m really stressed out,"we are taught to admire,
even copy what they do. In my work as a stress consultant(顾问)I h

es something like this:our present level of stress will be exactl
y that of our tolerance to stress. You''ll notice that the people w
ho say,"I can deal with lots of stress" will always be under a gr

of their tolerance.Usually it takes a serious problem of some kin

you want to start doing is noticing your stress early before it
gets out of hand. When your schedule(日程安排)is getting out of hand,i
t''s a sign that it''s time to slow down and reconsider what''s impo

that when you catch yourself getting too stressed out-early,befor
e it gets out of control-your stress will be like the "snowball"
rolling down the hill. When it''s small, it''s manageable and easy t
o control.Once it gathers more,however,it''s difficult,if not impo
ssible,to stop. There''s no need to worry that you won''t get it all
done. When your mind is clear and peaceful and your stress level

e end of a sentence. However, the full stop has a different meaning
to teenagers and those in their early 20s,who see this punctuati
on mark as a sign of anger. And there is a reason for that. The you

ns of communication. When sending messages, they tend to break up t
heir thoughts by sending each one as a separate message, instead o
f using a full stop. Some have said the full stop is unnecessary w

eir eyes tens of thousands of times every day.Scientists have lon
g believed blinking was an involuntary movement and served mainly
to keep the eyeballs wet.But a new study suggests it has a more
important purpose. An international team of scientists from the Un
iversity of California at Berkeley studied the blinking of human
eyelids. The journal Current Biology published their findings. The
team said they found that blinking "repositions our eyeballs so w
e can stay focused" on what we are seeing. They said that when we
blink our eyelids, the eyes roll back into their sockets﹣the bony
area that surrounds and protects the eyes. However, the researchers
found the eyes don''t always return to the same position(位置).They
said this causes the brain to tell the eye muscles(肌肉)to reorgan
ize our eyesight.Gerrit Maus is the lead writer of the report. He
serves as an assistant professor of psychology at Nanyang Technol
ogical University in Singapore.Maus said,"Our eye muscles are qui
te sluggish(迟缓的)and imprecise(不精确的),so the brain needs to constan
tly adapt(改编)its motor signals to make sure our eyes are pointing
where they should be.Our findings suggested that the brain measu
res the difference in what we see before and after a blink, and or
ders the eye muscles to make the needed corrections."The research
ers said that without such corrections our surroundings would app
ear unclear and even jumpy. They said the movement acts "like a st
eadicam(摄影稳定器)of the mind."The researchers said they asked volunt
eers to sit in a dark room while storing at a small dot on a flat
surface. They used special cameras to follow the volunteer''s blin
ks and eye movements. After each blink, the dot was moved one centi
meter to the right. The volunteers did not notice this, but the bra
in did.It followed the movement and directed the eye muscles to r
efocus on the dot. After the dot was moved in this way 30 times,th
e volunteers'' eyes changed their focus to the place where they pr
edicted it would be.Professor Maus said."Even though the voluntee
rs did not consciously register that the dot had moved, their brai
ns did,and adjusted(调整)with the corrective eye movements. These fi
ndings add to our understanding of how the brain constantly adapt

ecently discovered how to make families work, more successfully.A
surprising idea has appeared:the single most important thing you
can do for your family,it seems,is to develop a family story.I fi
rst heard this idea in the mid﹣1990s.from Marshall Duke,a profess
or at Emory University.Duke was studying stories in families when
his wife,a children''s learning specialist,made a discovery: "The
students.who know a lot about their families will do better when
they face challenges(挑战),"Sara said.Interested,Duke set out to t
est her conclusion. He and Emory workmate Robyn Fivush developed a
method called the "Do You Know?" degree that asked children to a
nswer 20 questions such as:Do you know where your grandparents gr
ew up?Do you know where your mum and dad went to high school?Do y
ou know about an illness or something really terrible that happen
ed in your family?Duke and Fivush asked those questions to member
s of four dozen families in 2001.They then compared the children''
s results with a group of psychological(心理学的)tests the children h
ad taken and reached a conclusion that agreed to Sara''s theory.Th
e more children knew about their families'' histories, the stronger
their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self﹣re
spect, and the more successfully they believed their families work
ed from generation to generation(代代传承)."We were really surprised,
"Duke said. The researchers mentioned the children after the terri
ble events of September 11,2001."Once again," Duke said,"the ones
who knew more about their families proved to be stronger."Why do
es knowing where her grandmother went to school help a child over
come something terrible and difficult?Duke said that children who
have the most self﹣confidence have what he calls "a ''strong inte
rgenerational self".They know that they come from something bigge
r than themselves.Duke suggested that parents do the same activit
ies with their children again and again.Any kind of activities wo
rk to teach the sense of history:holidays, vacations, big family ge
t﹣togethers, even a drive to the shop. "These traditions become pa
rt of your family," Duke said.Years of research have showed that
most happy families also communicate successfully, but it''s not si
mply a matter of talking through problems.Talking also means tell
ing a positive(正面的)story about yourselves.When faced with a chall
enge,happy families,like happy people,just add a new chapter(章)to
their life story that helps them overcome the difficulty. This sk
ill is very important for children when they are growing up.The b
ottom lines:if you want a happier family, create, refine and retell
the story of your family''s best moments and your relations'' abil
ity to overcome difficulty. That act alone may prove the fact that
your family will thrive(兴旺) for many generations to come.(1)What

Which of the following is true, according to the passage?A.The eve
